Hello Jenny
Thanks for your email.  I am Máire McEnhill and I live about 2 miles from Derrynamansher. My dad was born in Derrynamansher and he was a McCafferty, so that was why I was interested in your  search.
I got the information from Joe Mulligan, who is a grandnephew of Anna McMullan and who lives in
Derrynamansher.

Regards
Máire

Hi Maire,
Wow it's great to have some of the family still living in Derrynamansher.
My mother in law is Eibhlin McDonnell, daughter of Roise MacMahaon (nee MacMullan) Eibhlin came to live in England but all her siblings still live in Dublin they are the children of Roise (nee MacMullan) & Charles MacMahon.
Unfortunately Roise died this year in Dublin and she was the last of the MacMullan children.
So it would be great to get back further on my husbands family.
Patrick Coyle & Rose Harley are the furthest back I've managed.
Did you find any connections with Coyles to McCafferty's in your searches?
I live in Bexleyheath,Kent by the way.
Best wishes
Jenny :D

Jenny:
I am glad to see that you have made some family connections in Derrynamansher.
Maire, how far from Ranafast are you? I recall some wonderful times there immersed in the language and culture, listening to Mici Sean and his stories, learning set dances from Ducky Mallon and of course meeting the girls from schools all over the North.  Ah, those days!

Pat
I was born in Ranafast and Micí Sheáin was my great uncle, is it not a small world.  Ranafast is less
than 2 miles from Derrynamansher.  Colaiste Bhríde is still going strong.

To Pat or Maire or anyone else out there who knows,
I am getting confused by the use of Mac or Mc. In todays use my husbands family seem to use Mac but I have noticed that in older records I'm finding McMullan, McMahon etc. Can you advise on the correct usage or is it interchanable. I know spellings in the past were not always hard and fast but when I record family in my records which should I use please?
Thankyou
Jenny

Jenny
Both means the same now. Mac means son of i.e. Pat son of Mahon or Mullan etc.
Mc is an anglicized version of Mac.

Maire:
It sure is a small world!
Jenny, you asked about the Mc and Mac but now the fun begins. I want Maire to explain for you the custom of naming in the Gaeltacht using her great uncle as an example!  Mici Shean Neil O'Baoill (not sure of that spelling).

Maire, I stayed at teach Donai Phadi Fhelimi and another time at teach Hudai phadi hudai.

Great times!

Hello everyone. I have a possible Coyle named Jane that was married to a Hugh McLaughlin. They had a daughter named Jane who also married a McLaughlin named andrew. Also wondering if your Rose McCafferty could have been married to a John Doherty in about 1865. My email is (*). Great site and conversation here. Keep it up, Bob
