I am descended from a branch of the Murtaughs that all left Dundalk in 1855 and went to Sunderland, Co. Durham in north-east England. Patrick and John ended up as "Murtha" and that is the name that stuck down the generations.

In fact even in the original baptismal records,al three variations of the spelling are present within the family:

Murtha
Murtaugh
Murthaugh

There are still lots of Murthas in Sunderland although my grandfather who married Dorothy Murtha moved to London between the wars.
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

A FAMILY FARM WAS CALLED "TANKERS ROCK"

The townland name was Tankardsrock- 332 acres in civil parish of Castletown, Dundalk Poor Law Union, Upper Dundalk Barony, Co. Louth.

In 1854 one of the tenants was a Matthew Murtagh:

I am descended from Mary Murtagh who married Edward Crawford. She was born about 1851 & was in Birkenhead on the 1891 census & I think Liverpool before that .I think they left Dundalk after 1881
