Hi Chris, I was just reading through this thread once more and it hit that the exception of 6/7 names, these families still live in Horsham. I cannot remember the dates, but St Mary's churchyard was closed for burials and the new cemetery was opened in Hillside. There is a plaque in Guildford Road which marks the site of a stone which was reputed to be where the coffins were placed to give the bearers a rest! I am in Horsham at the end of the month. I will take a photo, get the details and forward on to you. This may explain why the Lakers were buried in a C of E churchyard

Horsham has had some gruesome history. It is reputed to be the site of the last public hanging in England, in East Street. It is also said to be the last place in England where a woman sold herself into bondage.
Knight (Nottingham & Hants) Hancock, (Kent) , Hancox (Warwickshire), Linneys (Hants) Brothers (Langford, Beds,East London), Bridgers (East London)

Other restorers please feel free to use my work if wished

Hi Chris

I notice you have the surnames Groombridge and Grinstead on your list.  When you have time I'd love to see what you have on these names.

Many thanks

Karen

Hi Chris

I see from your website [1066 Genealogy] that you have transcriptions for the following names:

Dewdney
Greenfield
Holden
Knight
Matthews
Puttock
Wells

Can you send me details of these inscriptions as I think they may relate to various branches of my family.

Hope you can help,

Matt

Hi Matt

I posted the previous message to yours but have not yet had a reply from Chris.  I suggest you join the Sussex Family History Group.  They have all the information re gravestones, a massive name database you can search easily and parish register transcripts for baptisms and burials.  It costs £11 for the year and is very good value for money.

It might be quicker that waiting for Chris to reply!

Karen

Hi Karen

Yes, thank you for your enquiry and apologies for the late reply - we have recently moved house and as yet a lot of my records (hard copy on paper) are still packed away - Have had to go through the boxes to find the Horsham Church ones to answer yours and Matts enquirys.  (This particular data/church/section is not computerised yet)

GROOMBRIDGE:
516 - Groombridge Henry

GRINSTEAD:
616 - Grinstead Daniel 27th April 1819 aged 39 years, and wife Sarah 1831 aged 60 years
642 - Grinstead Elizabeth, wife of Richard, 19th January 1771 aged 75 years
669 - Grinstead Henry (?1746)

As i stated in the original posting some of the information recorded was very sparse when it was done in 1952 by Donald Slyfield  - commissioned by Horsham Urban Council

Hope it has been of help to you

Thanks for that info Chris.

I also asked the SFHG if there was any inscription for Henry Grombridge, but unfortunately she said only his name was legible.  Still  there is a grave number, and i also read somewhere that there are two Henry Groombridges mentioned on plaques inside the church so i need to go down there and take a look i think!

Thanks a lot for getting back to me and keep up the good work!

Hi Chris

Thanks for all those, yes I think they will be very useful as I am sure most of them relate to people in my family tree. Do you have photographs of any of these at all?

Thanks again for your help.

Matt
