Help from Newspapers etc Winnipeg/Vancouver
« on: Tuesday 03 January 06 16:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Are there any Newspaper archives for Winnipeg and Vancouver available on the net?
I have found these quite helpful for another branch of the same family in USA.

I googled and found a chargeable archive that contained only limited time period.

I am still trying to track down my Edwards and Smith Families.

Many of them ended up in Vancouver as far as my limited info goes, but Caroline Emma Edwards, and her daughter Emma Caroline Smith clearly remained in Winnipeg area including St Vital.
I have not found them yet in 1911, though there is a high likleihood they are in Canada by then.

More photos have come to light. These just raise more questions as many are people whose names I don't have yet!

Perhaps there are some burial records.

Of all the branches of the Holmes family, this seems to be the most stuck (apart from tracing them further back in UK!)

I have tried most of the normal souces, Vital reocrds - only a couple of deaths in Vancouver found,
just one small branch of the Edwards found in Ninette, Manitoba, who were in Vancouver within about 8-9 years.

Just using surnames and then looking for the first names, or places found
seems to work best, as it isn't a refined database....Plus it may not be kept
up anymore judging by the header comments... J.J.

The Winnipeg Public Library has an extensive collection of Henderson's City Directories. I've used them in the past to find a grand-uncle who someone remembered had lived in Winnipeg at one time. Unfortunately I don't live in Winnipeg myself anymore, but maybe there's someone lurking who does. Keep checking back with Automated Genealogy too. Eventaully they'll have all the transcriptions done... Good luck!
