Reavil somewhere in Ireland
« on: Tuesday 03 January 06 20:34 GMT (UK) »
I have just come across an ancestor of mine called George Reavil who is stated on the England/Wales 1851 Census, as being born in Ireland in 1819.

Where do I start to research possible relations in Ireland, as the only information I have is that his Father was a soldier called William Reavil (1786) birth place unknown and his mother was Margaret Broadie (1799) born in Brixham, Devon?

Anybody who can give me some guidance would be most appreciated.

Also, see below:

(You will need to look up 'Griffiths Valuation of Ireland' if you are not already familiar with this term).

This site at least will give some indication of where the surname occurred in the mid 19th century; your William, if he had stayed in Ireland, would of course be more than old enough to rent/hold land somewhere.
Wexford seems a good possibility; geographically, bearing in mind he went over to Devon at some point; and also because of strong military presence ( you didn't mention if the family were protestant?)

Cheers

Many thanks Mags, It would appear that George was born in Linsale, Cork whilst his father William Reavil was serving in the army. I am waiting for the certificate to be sent which should provide me with further information.
