Fowler's move from Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 03 January 06 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi, new to this forum so hopefully posting in the correct place!
I'm looking into my GG Grandfather - Thomas Fowler.  Details I have are:
Born 1848 Grimston, Yorkshire
Married Sarah Richardson 22 Nov 1871 Helmsely
Children
-William Richardson Fowler 1873 Byland Abbey
-John Frederick Fowler 1876 Scarthingwell (my GGrandfather)
-Robert Fowler 1876 Scarthingwell (unsure if the two above dates are correct)
-Joseph Fowler 1878 Scarthingwell
-Frances Theresa (Teresa) Fowler 1884 Scarthingwell
The last place I have for Thomas and his family is Scarthingwell (possibly as a coachman at Scarthingwell Hall).  He moved to Traquair House as a coachman possibly in the 1880s but trying to find out if the children moved with him at the same time (they all ended up in Scotland).
Many thanks, Sharon

Welcome to Rootschat, Sharon

I am a little confused by your posting and am not too sure exactly what you are asking for.

This family appear on the 1881 and 1891 census in England - do you have these? Your GGrandfather isn't with them in 1891

You don't say which year you last have sight of them.

Are you looking for them in Scotland or England and when??

Tricia :)

Hi Tricia
Sorry not to be very clear.  What I'm hoping to find out is if Thomas did work at Scarthingwell Hall and if so when did he leave to move to Scotland.  I understand that the same family owned Scarthingwell Hall and Traquair House at the time.
Also, did his children all move at the same time as Thomas.  I've looked in the census for Scotland but cannot find some of them.  I know his daughter lived with him at Traquair Avenue, but the sons seemed to have spread across the Scottish Borders and Midlothian.
I do have a letter from Traquair House that mentions a house available for "the man Fowler".  I'll look it out for the date when I get home after work.
Does Scarthingwell Hall still exist?  I can't seem to find out much about it.
Thanks again, Sharon

This is a bit of a problem as none of the census records state where he is working.  In 1881 he is a Coachman living in the area where the Hall is situated but that doesn't help us.

There is a picture of the Hall at this link but doesn't give any information

I'm really sorry I can't be of more help. I'll see if I can find someone who will be more useful.

Hi Sharon

Tricia contacted me on your behalf about this one.  I hope I can help.

You say that Thomas ended up in Scotland.  What evidence do you have for that?  Is it possible that he didn't get there?  Do you have his death record?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Ticker

Hi Ticker

Thomas died at the grand old age of 92 in 1941 at Traquair Avenue, just outside Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders.  His wife Sarah, daughter Theresa also died at Traquair Avenue. Theresa died in 1921, Sarah in 1922 and not sure when Adam Wilson (Theresa's husband) died, have not found a death cert and could not read the date on the stone but he did register Sarah's death.  In the summer I went to Traquair Church and saw their grave, all four are in the same plot alongside the Maxwell Stuarts who still own Traquair House, and which has opened up another mystery to me as it's such a grand headstone - especially I feel for a Coachman (Traquair Church told me to get in touch with the Church of Scotland who in turn told me to get in touch with Traquair Church!!).

The 1901 Census for Traquair shows Thomas, Sarah and Theresa (Treasa) at Traquair House.

I also have been told that a relative remembers visiting Thomas at Traquair.

I just can't figure out when they arrived here.
