1841 lookup please...Eaglesome in AYR
« on: Thursday 05 January 06 19:45 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to 1841 census for Scotland.

Looking for an Agnes Eaglesome (Eaglesham / Eglesome) who would be aged approx 24-27, born in Ballantrae, Ayr.
Need to establish who her parents were, possibly had brothers Thomas and James, although they may well have been married and living at  a different address. Agnes didnt maary until 1845, so chances are she was still living at home with parents.

Many thanks, gill

Freecen for Ballantrae 1841 shows

1. Eglesham Agnes  aged 21 - living with a Janet Galloway who is married, with a note “husband  absent (fisher)”.   Living Ballantrae Village.

Presumably he was away at sea.  No relationship given between Agnes and Janet but she is not listed as servant or boarder so perhaps she is Janet’s sister.

2. Egelsom Agness aged 20 living at Belmenich (Farm?) with a family called McCready.   Again there is no occupation listed, but there are plenty of servants there - presumably she was not one of them.

For the whole of Ayrshire (but the records on Freecen are not complete) there is only one other.
3. Eaglesham Agnes living at Alloway Street, Ayr - age 20, no occupation given.  The address appears to be a rooming house as there is a real mix of families and occupations staying there.

I searched on aged between 20 and 30, female, single.

Incidentally, my grandfather’s cousin married an Alexander Eaglesham in Dailly in 1911.  One witness was Hugh Eaglesham, possibly his brother.   Alexander’s parents were Alexander Eaglesham and Mary Bryden, from the age on the marriage certificate Alexander was born in 1882.   No other information on this family.
Ayrshire: McCormick (mack); McFadzean; Kerr; Brown; Paton; McGregor; McDonald; Moffat; Connel; Bone
Dumfries/Lanarks: (pre-1840) McDonald; Moffat; Bone; Hamilton; Hyslop; Sandiland; Bredwood; Kerr; Brown
Ireland (pre-1820) McCormick (Monaghan)

Hello Gill,

My son-in-law  has the Eaglesham in his family name and from memory there is an Agnes believed to died at a young age and her husband remarried. I think she came from Scotland.
I'll have to ring him and go over things again.

Regards

Tweedie

Hi Tweedie,
sorry its taken so long to reply to your message.
My Agnes Eaglesham  (married to Wiiliam John Paterson) didnt die until 1885 at the age of 70 in Girvan, Ayrshire, so this would rule out a connection.
Thanks for replying anyway.
Regards
