is there some one out there who can do a look up for a convict that was sentenced in cheshire and transported to australia in 1835 aboard the "marquis of huntley(4)". his name was james jupp and i am hoping to get some idea from his papers of where he was born and anything that might help tie him into the family or maybe even provide details showing no connection at all. thanks all

hi Vickie,
If you have a look at http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/convicts_3689.asp there are a number of indexes relating to convicts.  For tickets of leave you can click on the link to the Society of Genealogists, where their records show the following:

Last name:   Jupp
First name:   James
Ship:   Marquis of Huntley
Year:   1835
Native place:   NR
Trade or calling:   NR
District:   Bathurst
Ticket no.:   39/2213
State Records shelf ref:   4/4134
State Records reel no:   934

I believe you can order the actual ticket of leave image from them -  it should show where he was tried and when, his crime etc.  Alternatively it would be available on microfiche or film at the National Library of Australia and probably the state libraries as well (not sure exactly where in Oz you are  :) )  You can also look at the ship's indent which will give details of James.

Hi Vickie,
The actual ticket of leave or ticket of leave butt and the indent from the ship will show you where he was born - probably not a town, but at least a county.  You would have to order the ticket and indent or get someone to look them up for you.
