1841 Census Lookup Please GRAY in Burnham or Upton cum Chalvey COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 07 January 06 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Mary Ann Gray (Grey) was born in Burnham in 1827 and married Henry Johnson in Upton cum Chalvey in 1849.  She had a brother Thomas born in 1835 possibly in Farnham.  Her father William Gray was born in 1795 and was in Upton in 1851 with Thomas.  I am in particular looking for her mother and any other siblings.

many thanks

I have identified two other siblings.  Richard born 1826 and Ann born in 1832.  The mother's name was Frances but I can't find any of these after the birth of Thomas in 1835 which was presumably at Farnham Common.

Hi David,

This looks like them in 1841,

1841  HO107/61/9  f.14  p.30  Upton cum Chalvey

William GRAY     45  Ag Lab
Francis            45
Richard            15  Ag Lab
Mary               13
Ann                  7
Thomas            5

All born in County.
Although spelt Francis she is in the female column.

I see that William is married in 1851 so wonder if this could be Frances,

To fill in where I have now got to.

Frances was Frances Allen who married William in 1816 in Upton cum Chalvey.

I have found three more children

Jane born and died 1839
Charlotte born 1819
James born 1821

I have failed to find any marriage for Richard and Lydia although in 1881 she is visiting Mary Watson at Wilton Park Farm Beaconsfield.  Mary died a little later age 72 and I suspect may have been her mother or an elderly relative.

I think Lydia may have been a CHANNER,

IGI
Lydia CHANNER
03 Jun 1829  Farnham Royal, Buckingham
Father: Meshach CHANNER
Mother: Albina

1841 HO107/48/5  f.6  p.7  Farnham Royal
Seer Green

Ann CHANNEL      70  Mistress Infant School
Meshache           35  Labour
Mary                  30
Lydia                  14
James DOWSETT  40  Ag Lab                       All born in County

I can see this marriage,

Lydia CHANNER  Dec Q 1845  Eton  v.6  p.687

Richard GREY with same details.

There is also this odd couple, Free BMD shows Dec Q 1842 as complete,

Mary CHANNER  Dec Q  1842  Eton  v.6  p.640
The image shows p.640 but there is no match for Dec Q Eton with this ref.

James WATSON  Dec Q  1842  Eton  v.6 p.646
The image shows p.646 but there is no match for Dec Q Eton with this ref.

I wonder if there is a mistranscripton on the index.

In 1851/61/71 Mary WATSON wife of James is born abt. 1810 Seer Green and seems to be the same one Lydia is with in 1881.

At first I thought it was her mother/stepmother Mary from the 1841 census remarrying but Meshach CHANNER doesn't die until,

Meshach CHANNER  Mar Q  1872  age:66  Amersham  v.3a  p.296

So as 1841 doesn't show relationships I wonder if Mary is his sister not his wife  :-\

Thanks Daisy,

It all fits nicely.  I searched Richard Gray and Grey back from 1844 and Richard Gray forward but forgot to do Grey.

With Mesach a visitor in 1851 this ties up the loose ends of Richard and Lydia.

Also with both the Eton FreeBMD entries coming up as single entries on a page and a difference of 6 betwen the pages it is fairly certain that one of them is a mistranscription

//

I can't see this family in 1871 but in 1881 they are still in Newington  RG11/535  f.17  p.28 and Ann's birthplace is back to Bray Berkshire.

There is this possible marriage in Cookham, registration district for Bray,

James GRAY  Jun Q  1843  Cookham  v.6  p.632

Ann BEACONSEAL  with same reference.
