Civil Registration
« on: Sunday 08 January 06 10:12 GMT (UK) »
If I am reading these right (reply to message "Does anyone visit Archives in Limerick?" and reply to "Birth c 1884 Limerick"),  civil registration of protestant (also called Church of Ireland?) marriages began in 1845, and civil registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864.
Is this correct? Do the same dates apply for registration of births and deaths?
How does one find a Catholic event before these dates? e.g. I know that Catherine CULHANE (a Catholic) was born 25 Oct 1859 to James and Catherine nee MURPHY in Co. Limerick (on her marriage certificate name of town is something like Aralahon) - Is it possible to get a birth certificate? Her older brother was born 1845, so her parents married pre 1845. Is it likely that there will be a record of their marriage? How & where can I find it?

Hi
This site may help those who are new to researching in Ireland!
Yes, 1864 was start of civil registration in Ireland for Catholic Births, Marriages, Deaths.
For Catholic records before 1864 you would need to know the parish/townland; records can be obtained, if they exist, from various sources listed in the John Grenham site given here:

Thanks Mags,
An excellent site for a beginner to Irish research. I managed to find the links to the pre-1864 Catholic records. It was a rather tantalising read - I hope the ones that I want are available. The placemanes feature was frustrating though. I think I'm going to have to look elsewhere to work out the parish that I need, then come back to this site.

You're welcome.

Try this site next, by entering 'Culhane' in the search box, and choose co.Limerick, you get these results.
(See the Grenham site for explanation of 'Griffiths Valuation' if you're not already familiar with it).

The place name you have 'Aralahin' could be misspelt or hard to read, so try other variations.

Good luck!

PS By coincidence, my best friend at school in Oxford, England, was a Carmel Culhane, like me English born but Irish parents and ancestors. I know that her father was LImerick born, but that's all I remember. Haven't seen her in years, unfortunately.
My area of research is also co.Limerick, in the Galtees area bordering co.Tipperary and co.Cork (3 different counties to choose from for just the one family!) What fun...

Wow, thanks again Mags,
I managed to find what I believe to be the correct Parish - Its Kildimo-Pallaskenry if I'm right about the town name being Ardlahan. Baptisms and marriages are available from 1831. Now I know where to start.

Good!
I thought it could be Ardlahan too, so good luck with your searching.
