William and Esther Lowrie/Lawrie/Laurie 1851
« on: Monday 09 January 06 13:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello I am trying to track down William Lowrie and family I think they would have been living in the Calton Bridgeton area in 1851( which I think is or was part of Barony ) in Glasgow.
William seems to have died sometime before the 1861 census was taken as his wife Esther describes herself as a widow, yet he seemed to be alive in June of 1860.
William and Esther 4 children that I know of namely Robert b about 1836 Frances b 1838 d 1860 Rebecca b 1841 and David b 1844.
Robert, Frances and Rebecca were born in Renfrewshire and David was born Glasgow.
Hoping someone can help
thanks Dav

The 1851 index shows William (39) and Esther (39) Lowrie living in the Inner High area with Margaret 16, Frances 14, Robert 12 , Rebecca 9 and David 6.

There is a William Lowrie in Calton but he is aged 22 and living on his own.

I can find no trace of the family in the 1841 index for Glasgow.

Thanks Falkyrn
That seems to be the family, I was not aware of Margaret but it makes sense as William and Esther were married in 1831 in Neilston Renfrew, I am pretty sure the family in was in the Paisley/Neilston area in 1841and probably came to Glasgow sometime prior to 1844.
Could you tell me if the 1851 index supplies any other details, such as enumeration districts.
Thanks Dav

ward 556 enum: 35 Page 16: Lines 11 - 17

Re Neilston 1841 there is 1 William Lowrie aged 30 listed but there is no Esther and while there is a Margaret aged 7 she appears to be with different parents.
You may get better results if you can search the 1841 census for Paisley area.

I have some information on the above family.  William was dead prior to 1853 when Esther Porterfield claimed poor relief in Glasgow and described herself as a Wdow residing at 559 Gallowgate in Glasgow.
Her eldest daughter Margaret was described as aged 2o Married with one child and living in Edinburgh.

A member of the the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society gave me information on this family - and i have included a part of the letter for you information.

"First is William Lawrie/Laurie/Lowrie/Lowry (I kid you not, they’re all the one person) who married Esther/Easter Porter/Potterfield/Porterfield (Yes, you’ve guessed it, they’re all the one woman) in Neilston in 1831.  He died about 1853 and she in 1896.  Their children were Margaret, Frances, Robert, Rebecca and David, not all of whom reached adulthood.

Secondly, Andrew Lawrie etc etc m to Margaret Beattie, both of whom are about 71 in the 1851 census (Glasgow, Bridgton, I think- I can’t quite put my hand on the census sheet at this minute.)

William and Andrew are, I believe, the brother and father respectively, of Rebecca Lawrie who married James Stafford in 1832."

Hope this proves useful

Thanks Robert for the extra info, very helpful indeed.
Of course this now leads me to further questions.

Is the member of the the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society who gave you the  information on this family also researching this Family ?

Secondly I know that William and Rebecca Stafford are brother and sister.
But how does this person contend that  Andrew Lawrie etc etc m to Margaret Beattie, both of whom are about 71 in the 1851 census (Glasgow, Bridgton, I think- I can’t quite put my hand on the census sheet at this minute.)
are the parents of William Lowrie and Rebecca Stafford?

Thirdly have managed to lay your hands on Andrew and Margaret Lawrie in the 1851 Census ?

once again thanks for all the info
Dave

Sorry for delay in replying - the person in the Glasgow & West Scotland family history society is Gina Fisher. If you contact the society by e mail and leave a message for her attention it should reach her as she does some voluntary work in the office occassionally.  She passed me the information re the relationships you ask about and will be able to clarify how she came to that conclusion.
