Explanation of an Abbreviated Birth Place
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 21:53 GMT (UK) »

Hi

Happy New Year

According to the 1891 English census, my ancestor Thomas Bevils was born in Nk, Ireland in 1849.

Does anyone have any idea what the Nk stands for.

Many thanks for your time in reading this.

Little Lil

PS The lady in my photo has ancestors born in Ireland, if anyone thinks she may look like one of theirs, please contact me ..........

My guess would be either NOT KNOWN or NORTHERN Ireland (NI).
Perhaps some of the others on boards will have more ideas. ;D

I think it's probably Not Known.  It's a pretty common sight unfortunately!  At least you got the Ireland bit - sometimes you just get "NK" and nothing else  :'(

Cheers

Hi

I must be having a "grey day" as I hadn't thought of Not Known.

Many thanks for this.

Little Lil
