Greek account of Celtic dragon
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 22:10 GMT (UK) »
In "Python" 1959 U.Cal. Cam. p98-9, J.Fontenrose relates Greek writings on Celts. Herodotus of 5th.cent BC and Diodorus of 1st.cent. BC. wrote of Brettanos of Gaul as father of Echidna Kelto viper-woman, mother of Chimera goat-lion by virgin birth. Kelto and Herakles (Hercules) produced Keltos ("the celt").
Chimera battled Greeks in Asia Minor and became Mount Olympias volcano as guardian of Hades.
Echidna viper (>wyvern) may be Y Draig with the body of a snake. Dragon< Gr. drakon "snake".
Chimera goat-lion may be the goat-lion yale supporter of the Arms of Beaufort. Henry VII flew the dragon and yale flags of Cymru in 1485.
As sons of Herakles, son of Zeus, the Celts came from the heavens, which seems obvious.....
Chimera.

shw mae hwyl,
Chimera goat-lion of Beaufort and of St. George's Chapel may also be at Uffington. The white "Horse" of 1400-600BC. has horns (too big for ears), beard and lion hindquarters. The rear legs are curved, and thick compared to the front.
St.George's Chapel yale is unique with lion rear legs.
(search www. 1.yale lion tail 2.Beaufort yale 1485).
In heraldry, the unicorn supporters of the Arms of Kings of Scots "have tufts of hair and a lion's tail" with goat hooves (split, not smooth horse hooves). This goat-lion
on UK Arms may be Chimera, sister of Keltos.
Chimera was guardian of Hades upon becoming Mount Olympias volcano in Asia Minor.  Uffington<?uffern "inferno, volcano". At Uffington fort, the beast faces many Celtic graves.
Celts had a fort named Angora in Asia Minor: Strabo12.5.2. Angora goat-wool makes camelot cloth for chimere robes of bishops at St.George's chapel: OED 'camlat' 'chimere'.  Wool weaving tools were excavated at Uffington.
The camelot assemblies at Uffington may be like the assemblies at St. G's. at Windsor.  The historian who is writing about the chapel has sent this material to the chapel canons.
John Welch.

Angora now goes by the name of Ankara.

Indeed Angora /Ancyra became Ankara. Can you see that Celts named their fort for the goat which gives wool for camelot cloth? Strabo described the assemblies for judicial and political matters in Galatia there. Macedonian soldiers were issued new cloaks for their asssemblies, and Celts had migrated from north of Macedonia. This suggests that Celtic elite warriors wore camelot cloaks in assembly.
By extension, the same happened at Uffington fort of the Chimera goat-lion beast on the hill. Chimera<Greek chimaira "goat". Regimental goats lead their comrades in Cymric army units, as at Montpellier regiment of the French Army.  Camarades< chambre "barracks-soldiers"
<cham "goatwool tent of Khans".(Turkic- Mongol).

When Henry VII flew the goat-lion yale flag of Cymru in 1485, he may have imitated an event in ancient Asia Minor. The Cimmerians had invaded Ionia in the 8th cent BC and attacked Lydia on the west coast. They were defeated by Greeks and retreated to Lycia. At that time, Homer wrote of the flying horse Pegasus with Bellerophon at the wheel who defeated Chimera goat-lion. The Greek hero poured lead down her throat which melted in her fiery breath. Bullets of lead for sling-shots have been excavated in Grece. Chimera became Mount Olympias volcano in Lycia on the south coast, as guardian of Hades. _H.Rose"Handbook of Greek Myth" Methuen.
Possibly, Cimmerians had their Chimera symbol in the battle. Greeks observed 2-masted ships in 500BC and Chimaros was an early pirate in Troy.  Cimmeria is "Kimeri" in targums of Ashurbanipal of Assyria. Chimera is the sister of Keltos, the Celt. Did Cimmerians migrate westward?
In Sardinia, acciamara is a wool-jacket, zimmara in north Spain (Celtic), Fr. chamarre. Since 14th cent., at the latest,
it has been worn by UK bishops as chimere, made of camelot goatwool of Angora.-OED 'camlat' 'chimere'.
Chimera in  Lycia was south of the later Celtic fort of Angora. Chimera was a town on the north Sicily coast in Greek times, across the water from Sardinia. Mount Etna volcano is in Sicily, and Zeus flung Chimera's mother Kelto Echidna into it. She had produced Chimera by virgin-birth (some Greeks said Typhon snake-man was the father) and she claimed Chimera was equal to Athena war-goddess.
Chimera<Gr. chimaira "goat". A regimental goat leads the French Army at Montpellier, north of Sardinia.
Chimera now sits above St.George's chapel at Windsor, where bishops wear chimere of camelot.
