Don,t know if this is a bit too late, but when i was in Kendal in the 60s there was rumour of a home at Levens,Nr Kendal,

The Tourist Infomation at Kendal or Barrow in furness may be able to help,

Just seen this (new to Roots Chat).

Brettargh Holt at Levens was an unmarried mothers' home. Still there, but in a different role.

see link http://www.catholiccaringservices.org.uk/brettargh.htm.

I think there was also at least one other in Kendal  (Sedbergh Road) but can't remember anymore details.

Helme Chase - a  NHS maternity hospital from about 1948 till 1990's - now Helme Chase Maternity Unit at the Westmorland General Hospotal (I know that's not really genealogy!)
