1841 DEVON census image question
« on: Wednesday 11 January 06 18:29 GMT (UK) »
I was checking out a BURROW family on the 1841 census (Devon)  - but the transcription for 2 of the ages at British Origins doesn't agree the same children's ages in 1851.

When I looked at the 1841 images, I'm pretty sure these ages been written down as 2 1/2 (2 and a half) & 1 1/2 (1 and a half) but they have been transcribed by British Origins as 25 and 15.

Should these have been transcribed as 2.5 and 1.5??

Heres the reference

Census 1841
TNA Ref HO107-0237-7
ED 7
Folio No 4
Page No 2

The 2 entries concerned are

William Burrow Line 11 and Sarah Burrow Line 12.
Just to compare - Mary on Line 13 is 5 months

In 1851 William was 12,  Sarah was 11 and Mary was 10

I'd like to know what others think -  those of you who have access to 1841 Devon images.

Did the enumerator write down fractions for William & Sarah?

Regards

Hi,

I haven't looked at your images, but I have seen fractions used in children's ages several times on census.  I guess they were just trying to be more accurate, or writing down literally the age given.

Judging by the ages on the subsequent census I am sure you are right that they have been mistranscribed.

Hi BD,
You are right, they are definitely 2 1/2, 1 1/2 and 5 months.
Have attached a pic for confirmation.
Cheers  ;)

Thank you Prue for that confirmation.  ;D

And Sue, I've never seen any fractions in the many images I have looked at to date - which is why I was surprised to see them.

Now that I know that they were used, I wont be so surprised the next time I see them. :)

Thanks
