George Jowett
« on: Thursday 12 January 06 20:03 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information about George Jowett who was born in Stockport in 1821/2. I have his Fathers name as Joseph but no mothers name . George married Elizabeth Jowett from Belper, Derbyshire and I'm wondering whether the family were from Stockport or originally Belper. I'm really stuck on this and would appreciate any help or advice.... cjowett

 Hi there

I'm presuming  that the info you have re.George
is from 1851 census Belper Derbyshire.
There is also an entry (Belper)
for a Joseph Jowett born 1789 shoemaker.

I f you don't have this census info, get in touch,
will be happy to help.

Hi Jackie
Thanks for your reply, I've got 1850 info. on George and Joseph
also school records which show George with a shoemaker father Joseph, the years match up but the name is spelt Jewett.
I also have Georges marriage cert., pity it doesn't include mothers name.
Any suggestions as to what I do now
                                                       Thanks.....Chris

Hi

Is the Joseph in the 1851 census that is in Belper, father to the George you mention? If so then it gives Josephs wife as Easter, age 65 born Belper.

Hi

I'm not sure if he is or not, I don't know the name of Georges mother. I did find a birth record of a James Jowett born to Joseph and Esther Jowett but that was in Belper 1826 and George was born in Stockport - maybe they moved

Hi

I have checked the 1841 for Derbyshire and cannot find the Joseph and Easter (Esther) that appear in the 1851.

I would advise a lookup request for 1841 for Stockport, lets hope they didnt move elsewhere!!!!

The marriage of the George Jowett born Stockport took place in 1846 so I would presume they moved to Derbyshire between 1841 and this date.

Good luck in your hunting.

I'll give the Stockport look-ups a try. Thanks Nicky.
