DYKES of Audlem and Dykes Ellison in Buntor
« on: Friday 13 January 06 13:39 GMT (UK) »
Help!

I've not gotten very far with my tree on my father's side.  I'm looking for the DYKES of Cheshire.  Specifically:

From the 1881 Audlem, Cheshire census, I get:

Joseph Dykes (born 1852 +/- 1 yr) in Audlem, Cheshire
(wife) Eliza (born 1852 +/- 1 yr) in Whitchurch, Shropshire

1.  William (b. ~1874, Audlem)
2.  Joseph (b. ~1876, Audlem)
3.  John   (b. ~1878, Audlem)
4.  Prudence (~ 1880, Audlem)

Prudence married Thomas Ellison of Ellesmere, Shropshire and they moved to Manchester area by 1900.  They had 8 children, and one of those,
Hilda Dykes Ellison, was born on 15 Sep 1908, Woore Ln, Buntor, Cheshire.

Looking for links for Joseph and Eliza (from the census).

Thanks!!

Hi

There are two Joseph Dykes born in the same area in 1851 and 1852, and both marry between 1871 and 1881 so it would be only a guess as to which one is yours.

Do you have your Josephs fathers name from his marriage certificate at all?

No, I had traced back that far from the 1881 census, so I have no information on Joseph or Eliza other than what I've listed.   (I traced them back thru Prudence Dykes on the census.)

Perhaps an 1871 census may have them listed with parents?  I'm still trying to find Eliza's maiden name.

Hi

The 1871 census shows boths Josephs one is a farm labourer and with his family, the other is a labourer and living in Shropshire with his family.

1861 census shows both at home with parents Joseph and Mary, or Henry and Eliza

Without a fathers name how will you know which is right ?

There is a possible on FreeBMD Dec 1871 to Eliza Whally in Whitchurch Shropshire, vol 6a page 1435

I don't know.

I suppose I should firm up my leads by getting a copy of Prudence Dykes Ellison's birth certificate.

I've searched the Cheshire BMD, and found

Prudence Dykes, born 1879, Wrenbury, Cheshire Central, WR/18/034

My records from the census show Prudence's father is Joseph, who married Eliza.

On the Cheshire Marriage index 1866-1870, I have Joseph Dykes marrying Elizabeth Glassey in Nantwich, Cheshire Central, N6/186

On the Chester Marriage index, 1870-1875, The Joseph Dykes there married Hanna Billington.

I'm going to go with Elizabeth Glassey's Joseph Dykes.

The question is, can you match her Joseph with his parents?
