Photographer, TITTERTON, Ely
« on: Saturday 14 January 06 00:08 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to date a family photo.  Probably around 1880.  The photographer's name is engraved on the back - John Titterton, Ely.  Can anyone help?
Thanks

Thanks Sue - that's a good start for me - now - does anyone out there have a dated family photo by John Titterton so that we can compare the engraving on the back to try to date mine?  I know that many photographers changed the backs of their photos every few years.
Incidentally, for a great site on this subject of dating photos see:

Hi Peter,
Why not post a picture of your photo, so we can have a look?  Seeing the clothes and style of photo card might help us date it.

Hi I have about 40 cdv/cabinet cards by John Titterton.  One is dated 1873.  Others may be dated.  Post a scan of front and back and I will date it.  Regards Ron  www.victorianIMAGEcollection.com

Hi Peter,
Just off the top of my head....looks like 1870s to me.
What do you think, Ron?

Titterton – Dating info

Hi, John Titterton was in a studio in Ely from 1858 – 1900 – a long period so that does not help much.

His early cards named him a Jno, he switched to John in the late 1860s.

I have a dated cdv (with a different design) from 1873 – he is designated John by then.

Although rounded cornered mounts were being introduced in about 1867, square cornered mounts were still common in the first half of the 1870s.

¾ length portraits gained popularity in the early 1870s as the camera was able to move in closer to the subject

The style of the back of the card is not out of place with others in the early 1870s (I have over 5,000 DATED cdv to refer to)

My best estimate is that the photo is between 1870 and 1874.
