I don"t know Grant, I have experienced fishing in the North Sea and it can be really mean and a kind of cold that gets to your bones!

Thanks for the birth possibilities. James and Joseph look reversed and not really in line with most of the census info but they are not to be discounted!

Thomas is spot on!

I really appreciate your help.     Lumber- Jack

Thanks Grant,

I found a highly likely Robert Cook in the 1818 census ,married to Ellen ,as a coalscreener at North Seaton colliery. As they all ended up in North Seaton by 1818 ,including Euphemia, my  guess is that Joseph went there as an "advance guard" before the 1871.

Would you be kind enough to run a check for him in that vicinity in the 1871?

 Thanks very much,   Lumber-Jack

Thanks Grant very much for these.

I will now have to take some time to review the births , dates, and get a few certificates to be sure that I am on the right track for the sons.

I have also got some great leads , contacts and information on the origins of Thomas and Euphemia and on  the Wheatley connection.

I will likely be back with some specific questions when I have assessed all this.

I would still like to hear from some Cooks who might tie in directly.

At some stage I will try and rewrite my short story which will show how far off I was and how much RootsChatters like you helped me!

Best wishes      Lumber-Jack

Lumber-Jack,

Some info for you from Bamburgh Parish Registers...

Thomas Cook, born 24 July 1807, baptised 13 Sep 1807, 4th son, 5th child of Thomas Cook, husbandman, n.o.*Lowick in the Chapelry of Lowick, bhw** Margaret Walbottle, n o.* Lyam in the p.o.*** Chatton.

John Cook b.5 Nov 1808, bapt 20 Nov 1808, 5th son, 6th child of   ......... ditto......

Mary Ann Cook b.31 May 1811, bapt 23 Jun 1811, daughter of Thomas Cook of GLORORUM, schoolmaster, n.o. Lowick, bhw Margaret Harbottle, n.o. Lyam in the p.o. Chatton.

*= native of.
**= by his wife.
***= parish of.

Is seems obvious that James and Joseph Cook were born in/at Holling Hall, Wylam. The family were at Holling Hall on Census 1851, in the Wylam area.

And you lay the mispelling of Euphemia's name at the door of Census enumerator. But it is interesting to note that both the enumerator at Holling Hall on C1851, and the enumerator at Cullercoats , on C1861, at the other side of the county and 10 years later, spell her name UPHEMIA. Maybe she herself was the source of this spelling of her name. Maybe that was the then correct way, and the later introduction of a front "E" was a mistake or a fashion !

Found this reference to Halliwll in parish of Chollerton

we come to the Halliwell Burn and the Halliwell itself, a chalybeate spring, close [106] by the margin of the stream in an open and undulating portion of Gunnarton Fell.

Or it could be an odd spelling of Holywell, in Earsdon parish

If you want to see Holywell on a map go to
         http://www.multimap.com/
Select "Great Britain & NI" for the country and "Seaton Delaval " for the place and you should get a map at 1:100,000 that has Monkseaton, Holywell,  and Hartlet etc shown
