1871 (Poplar) - LAMB
« on: Saturday 14 January 06 18:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi, hope I'm putting this is on the right board. My apologies if not.

Could someone look for James LAMB on the 1871 census, please? He would have been about 16, so I assume his relationship to the head would be 'son'. He was born in Poplar. I have him on the 1881 (living at Bromley St Leonard if that helps) and also the 1891 (please see the following thread for that as I don't want to waste anyone's time - Casalguidi has already been so helpful with this).

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,120013.msg530124.html#msg530124

I know nothing about his parents or siblings, so I very much look forward to hearing from one of you good Rootschatters! You have already helped me so much. Thank you all. :)

Thanks so much in advance,
Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Have had a quick look and found this...

1871  RG10/694/87/12
8 Hamilton Grove, St mary, Lambeth, Norwood

Robert LAMB, Head, M, 40, Painter, b. Hoxton?
Emma Lamb, Wife, M, 40, b. Pimlico? This is not clear  ???
George Lamb, Son, Unm, 16, Plasterers Boy, Surrey Southwark
James Lamb, ditto on every thing, age 14
Emma Lamb, ditto, except Daur,  age 11
Robert Lamb, ditto, Son, age 8
Alick? Lamb, ditto, age 2, b. Surrey Norwood
John Lamb, ditto, age 4, b. Surrey Norwood

I thought it might be a match because the father was a Painter and the children look like they were working in the business.

Sorry I cant quite make out the 2 year old son's name, perhaps someone else can have a look and get it.

I will keep looking as James is only 14 here.

Regards
Hilary

Thanks for that, Hilary. :)

I just wish I had a name to match, because all I've got is James and his wife and kids in later years.

Now, I have three different occupations for James, so I'm no longer sure how strong a connection 'painter' is. He was a cabman in 1881, a mason's labourer in 1891, a painter in 1901 (if this is even his census return, I'm not completely sure) and a painter on his daughter's 1905 marriage certificate.

But we do have an 'Aleck' in the family, funnily enough.

Thanks again for looking,
Vicky

1871 RG10 552 folio 78
7 Silver street St Anne Limehouse  London
James Lamb 45 St George East Head Married Labourer
Mary Lamb 45  St George East Wife  Married
James Lamb 16  Mile End, Middlesex, Son Waiter
Alfred Lamb 13 Mile End, Middlesex, Son  Errand Boy
Alice Lamb 9  Poplar Daughter

To know one way or another whether this is a possibility for your James you really need to know who his father was and what his occupation was from James' marriage certificate.

Thanks for that, Valda. :)

I'm going to try and find James' marriage certificate today.

Thanks again for looking,
Vicky

If you can't find it I would suggest obtaining the birth certificate of one of his children to find their mother's maiden name and then try again for the marriage certificate with both surnames, remembering not everyone got married before the birth of their first child/children and sometimes entries were missed off the GRO index.

Thanks for the tip. :)

I'm actually waiting for one of his children's birth certificates at the moment. I haven't had any joy with finding a strong match to any marriages, what with not knowing his wife's maiden name.

Thanks again!
