Official registration of births began c1864. Do you know which parish or townland they came from and what religion as this may help you narrow down a church and see if any baptism records etc surrvive.

Hello Scotmum
Thank you for your reply
All I know of my G.G.Grandfather is that he immigrated to New Zealand on the  ship INDIAN EMPIRE.. He came by himself. It left the Port  London  and arrived in Auckland N.Z. 20th October 1862

On his death Certificate 1911 N.Z it said he had been in N.Z 49 years and he was 75 years old That works  out to his birth date 1836. It states Anglican
His parents  Francis & Margaret Winter(NEE Marshall) Born Aarmagh Belfast.

His marriage Certificate  has much the same  Parents & Place of birth, etc.
He actually called one of his sons Francis Marshall Winter.

Francis married a New Zealander,Eliza Murphy but her parents had actually come out to New Zealand in 1848  on the ship Ann-  Parents William  b 1804 KEADY Ireland &  Jane MURPHY born Ireland abt 1804 Her parents were John & Margaret Murphy(Nee Foster.) FENCIBLES , the deal being if they stayed here for more than 7 years they were given a house and 4 acres of land. I live just down the road from this land.It was gifted to the local Council and is now MURPHY PARK
He actually called one of his sons Francis Marshall Winter Born N.Z

Very frustrating going further back on these IRISH lines of the tree. I have all the New Zealand descendents and I want to go back further.

Hope I havnt bored you with my prattle BUT ONE NEVER KNOWS WHO MAY BE LOOKING.

Just a thought. If they he left London in 1862, perhaps there is a chance he lived in England at the time of the 1861 Census - have you checked this?

Hello Dianne,

What denomination were Francis and Eliza?

Would there be a family connection to the famous Dan Winter of Co. Armagh in whose cottage the Orange Order was founded after the Battle of the Diamond in 1795?

People leaving Ireland to head to Australia and N.Z. would probably had to travel first to England to catch a ship.
