Duffy - Newtown Hamilton
« on: Thursday 16 September 04 22:34 BST (UK) »
I am researching my great grandfather
William Duffy who was born in Newtown Hamilton in
1853, and married Margaret Warmington
in the same parish 12 December, 1878.
I am waiting for the copy birth certificate, but
have no idea if such records lead back to parents.
I wonder if the church is still there.

best regards to all

Mark

Hi,

The marriage certificate in 1878 should give the father's names of both and the address at the time of marriage and the father's occupations. The witnesses names are also there and these are often relatives of some kind.

In 1853, the thing you can get is a copy of the baptismal record as general registration hadn't started.

I think the catholic parish is Creggan Lower and is available in the National Library in Dublin  and PRONI in Belfast and your local family history centre from 1845 to 1880.

http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&parish=Creggan-Lower&churchid=205

This should show parents names including mother's maiden name and sponsors who are often relatives of some kind.

Hello Mark,

Here a link to a Warmington, Charlie, born in Enniskillen about 50 or 60 years after Margaret married. Charlie's nephew and nieces lived in South Belfast. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Charlie+Warmington&meta=
Fact is stranger than fiction as a family named Duffy lived almost next door.
This next link is a member of that family. http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/schools/11_16/blastni/nizone/rduffy.shtml broken link

All the Best, Christopher
