1871 census RG10 3866 folio 99
Hillbiss? Lane Sutton  Lancashire
Richard Naylor 62  Sutton, Lancashire, Head  Widower Farmer of 40 acres
Richard Naylor 34 Sutton, Lancashire, Son
Henry Naylor 28  Sutton, Lancashire, Son
Mary A Naylor 25  Sutton, Lancashire,  Daughter
Robert Naylor 23 Sutton, Lancashire,  Son
Ellen Naylor 19  Sutton, Lancashire,  Daughter

All farmer's sons and daughters
plus one servant

Despite the obvious differences with the 1861 census this seems to be the same family.
This census gives you a window of no more than a couple of years at most for Henry's marriage if he married Martha before the birth of their first known child Richard circa 1872/3.

This looks a strong possibility but you should really have one of their children's birth certificates to be sure Naylor was also their mother's maiden name.

From FreeBMD
Marriage March quarter 1872 Prescot Lancashire Volume 8b page 807
Henry Mercer Naylor
Martha Naylor

Sutton is in the registration district of Prescot. There were also a lot of Mercer families as next door neighbours to the Naylors.

There is a Martha Naylor in the censuses of the right age to match Martha on the 1881 census.

1861 census RG9 2753 folio 88

Square House Sutton  Lancashire
Joseph Naylor 64  St Helens, Lancashire,  Head  Married Coalminer

Well Valda you seem to be right about the farming life, what info i have here suggests that Henry was indeed a farmer working for the Hughes family who owned what is now Sherdley Park St Helens, Richard  was a farm labourer and lived in Warrington, Elizabeth married Harry Sheridan from County Fermanagh Ireland, and came back to St Helens and became a policeman year not known.
thanks everybody. :)

If you think Henry Mercer Naylor and Martha Naylor is the correct marriage then with the details I have given you, you can order  the certificate directly from the General Register Office
