Hi Dave,
That is very helpful, thank you for looking it up!! I had a look at the Jupp family but couldn't find a link to Thomas so I'm still working on his mother Martha Buckland b. 1787 (widow) from the 1851 census. It looks as if she was on her own, as you say Dave, when having Thomas. I have his father's name William Buckland, labourer, from Thomas' marriage certificate, but maybe he died before Martha gave birth to Thomas? Martha Buckland was pregnant 24 Dec 1831 and that confirms Thomas's birth year as 1832. Thomas's birth place is Shirley Surrey, would this come under Addington Baptismal Registers?
I have sent East Surrey FHS an email and I'm hoping they'll get back to me soon. This is the best lead I have on my (husband's) Buckland branch, thank you Dave!

I am new to this site and registered in order to respond to these exchanges from 2006. I have no idea whether anyone will pick it up nor how I will know, but I probably have information from Addington (the churchyard records of St Mary's church) which could shed light on Martha and Thomas Buckland. I would be very interested in their relationship with the Jupp family which was an important local family. I do think that Thomas born 1832 was Martha's son, the father was James Buckland and they had also had a daughter Esther in 1822. A James of the right age was buried here in 1835. A Martha (still Buckland) of the right age was buried here in 1859. For what it is worth, 'my' James Buckland was born and baptized here in October 1787, the son of Sarah Buckland, with no father being named on the baptism record. If this is of interest to anyone, even if it is information that you have known about for decades, do try to repost something here and I will endeavour to catch up.
