Hi

There is a record in the 1851 census for a John and Lavinia Read.  John is 24 and born in Woodlands, Dorset with occupation listed as Lawyer/Sawyer??

His wife Lavinia is 22 born in what looks to be  Gupage, Strickland.

They have two children, a son Richard John aged 4 born in Woodlands and a daughter Elizabeth age 2 also born in Woodlands.

Hi

Here's some more on the Read family:

1861 Census:

same details except the following children are listed, all of them born in Woodlands:

Elizabeth age 12
Ann R age 10
Stephen age 8
Emma age 4
Martin age 1

Reference RG 9/1336

Ancestry has lavinia mistranscribed as "Tonia Read"
John's occupation looks more like Sawyer

1871 census

address is 53 Woodlands.

The following children are listed, again all born in Woodlands:

Emma 13
Martin 11
Silas 9
Edith L.  7
Job 4
George 3
Ellen 6 months

Reference:  RG 10/1982

1881 Census

John 53; Lavinia 52

Children at home:
Edith L 19 Servant unemployed
Job 14 agricultural labourer
George 12 Scholar
Ellen 10 Scholar
Julia 8 Scholar born Woodlands

address  is 33 Whitmore

Next door is also a Read family as follows:

address 34 Whitmore
John Read 34 born Horton;  occupation is given as Sawyer
Elizabeth 36 born Cranborne, Dorset
James 9 born Haythorne, Dorset
William 6 Haythorne, Dorset
Robert 3 Woodlands
Thurza 1 Woodlands

Reference RG 11/2091

1891 census

Lavinia is living alone at 33 Whitmore and is listed as widow with a monthly income.

Reference RG 12/1635

Had a quick look, seems George married Fanny  born 1868 in Bridgport, they have children;
Martin married an Elizabeth from Poole, they also have children

If you would like lookups for John and Lavinias children, let me know.

This could possibly be John's death record:

John Read
Age 60 died December Quarter 1887; District of Wimborne; County Dorset Hampshire; Volume 5a; Page 161

1901 Census

There is a Lavinia Read living at 6 St Osmunds Cottages, Parkstone; listed as widow age 73 living on own means..has birth listed as Sutton, Dorset.

She is living with her single daughter Julia Read age 28 born Woodlands, Dorset.  Julia's occupation is listed as washer woman.  Note in margin states ''own account"

Reference RG 13/1981

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Im after more info about John and Lavinias daughter Elizabeth if you can help, she's my g-g-g-grandmother and settled in Timaru NZ with her first (horrible) husband.  She had a rough life in NZ with that man but went on to marry again.
Thanks again

Hi Cazza59,
just found this site. Are you related in any way to the Read family or are you a very helpful researcher ? I think that I have been in contact with "Choc" via another site. Just wondering in case there is another connection.
