« on: Thursday 19 January 06 11:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi
yes hear I go again been through the 1881 census for every SHAW born Ireland living in Northumberland & Cumberland  and used every spelling there is a lot but one thing sticks out the same spelling of the name crops up in the same area [those that lists an area ] most just say Ireland  but the spelling SHAW where the area listed seems to be

MOTHEL

COY DOWN[my Shaw was listed as just Down this could be a lead

Tipperary

Kings CO.

which of the above areas is likely to be a catholic area

thanks

Hi
Could it be misspelled, and actually read 'Doon'?
Just a thought!
If it is, there is a parish of Doon in co.Tipperary, which would probably be predominantly catholic.

Cheers,

And co.Tipperary too!
Try sean ruad's townlands index site, if you haven't already done so, it's excellent.

Mags
thanks I will try anything, all the Shaw's  I have found in Ireland up to now have been Presbyterian and I just know, going off what I know about the Rafferty family , Francis Shaw's daughter who married James Rafferty  would have had to be  a catholic
could you point me in the direction of the site you suggest I try

Type 'seanruad' in google.
It's called Townland Index
