1841 lookup - BURGE
« on: Saturday 21 January 06 16:25 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could help with a 1841 census lookup for Matthew Burge, possibly in Somerton.  Maybe living with a daughter Matilda Burge, born about 1820.  Matthew's occupation on Matilda's marriage cert in 1843 is shown as Horsekeeper.

Sorry I don't have much more information to go on!

Susan,

Many thanks for the information.  I've just taken a look at Matilda's marriage cert to find that it was witnessed by Jane Burge!

Could I trouble you to see if you can find any reference to a William Rowlands born in Oswestry, Shropshire about 1819?  On his marriage certificate to Matilda in 1843 he shows a residence of Wilton, Somerset, occupation is Gardener.  I wondered if he was in Somerset in 1841?

Many thanks

Anji

Matthew Burge, Horsekeeper.

You still about, AnjiM? Only I have BURGE in my line and this caught my eye.

My own Burge, ('Polly', my maternal GGrandma) was, as I'm informed annecdotally, a full blooded Irish Tinker.

Point 1. Tinkers would have to do with horses.

Polly married into English Traveller stock (ROLFE) and one of her daughters married GAITES.

Point 2. Gaites is well known around the west country and, again, I've heard that spelling may be the Irish form.

I could go on and on, listing saliant points. But to summarise; I have a strong suspicion there's more than a little Irish Traveller blood mixed in with all this.

In fact, I'm pursuing the suspicion that the Gaites's themselves came over on the boat and settled around Bath. Traveller blood definately gets drawn to the same. I wonder if the BURGE / GAITES / West Country nucleii give us a lead?

 Any thoughts, please? Anyone?

GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

Hi Steve G,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Thanks for the post.  Unfortunately I haven't had a great deal of time, recently, to pursue the BURGE side of my family history.  What you see in this post is pretty much all I have on my 3x Grt Grandmother.  I haven't proved the link to the Matthew Burge in the 1841 census, but I've got a pretty good feeling it is the right family.  I keep trying to get to the county records office, but so far time hasn't allowed.

I'm really intrigued by your infomation on Travelers.  This is definitely something to investigate.  I have a suspicion that ancestors on the other side of my family were from Travelling stock and I picked some information up at a Family History fair a while ago.  I really must dig it out and take a proper look.  I hadn't thought that it could apply to the Burges, but it could explain why I'm having difficulty tracking Matthew down!

If I ever get to that record centre, Ill let you know if I find anything.

Always happy to give someone else more to wreck their heads with, AnjiM  ;D

Actually, as we speak, I've just managed to drag one of my GA(I)TES's, kicking and screaming back to the holy lands of Bath! I found him saying he was born there ~ at last!

Now all I need to do is unravel the nonsense he appears to have promulgated about his year of birth and track down that all important bit of red paper.

Reason I mention that is because that'll leave me with more head room to go after my own BURGE connections. And I'm still hotly pursuing substantiation of this 'open secret' that GAITES is Irish too.

So much smoke about ~ Something's cooking. I'll let ye know if I find anything good on Burge. Anything you'd like me to bear in mind as I go?
