This is getting interesting Wendy!

I'll try and find out about this Samuel. I have him living with son Edwin in Newton Abbott (Devon) aged 75 in 1881. Found this ages ago but couldn't connect it in.

Brixham are is where all my Cornhills come from, but I'm not sure why you think there are 'Louis / Lewis' Cornhills from Devon ??

This Samuel was a ropemaker in Portsmouth Dockyard. Another branch on my tree were ropemakers, but they went the other way, to Devonport.

I'll get on the case!!
Michael.

Samuel b 1806 was from Brixham, his wife Mary also from Devon, and appears to have returned there after 1871. Mary died in 1875 in Portsea. She may have been his second wife, as there is a marriage of Samuel Cornhill and Mary Elicot in 1841 in Portsea.

According to the census returns (1841-1871), his children were George b 1837, Louis (later shown as Lewis) b 1841, and Edwin b 1843.  Louis' birth isn't listed on FreeBMD, but George and Edwin are both there.

The Louis's in Devon are Newton Abbott and Plymouth.

Louis Edwin RL born and died in infancy in 1874, Newton Abbott
Louis John married in 1875, Newton Abbott
Louis, died 1887 aged 46 in Plymouth. This could well be the son of Samuel above, as the dates fit perfectly.

I have a "thing" about names - this is developing into another one....often the hunch proves wrong, but sometimes it's right!

Mary who married Samuel is probably one and the same. Ellicott sounds like a good old Devonshire name to me! (variation on Endicott I think). Presumably they journeyed to Portsmouth together and were 'an item' before they got married. I hadn't found that marriage.

The Louis-es you have found are later generation then. I thought you meant earlier on.

Could I have a dirct e-mail address please Wendy, then I can e-mail you my early Cornhill tree, so that you know what I'm womping on about!

The earliest of the clan (so far) is Henry who turns up in the area in th eearly 18th century.  Where did he come from? Maybe kent or Portsmouth, and maybe Samuel's father connects to an earlie branch back here somewhere, and was a sojourner in Brixham.

It may take time, but we'll get there!!
Michael.
