Herschell family
« on: Saturday 21 January 06 19:56 GMT (UK) »
I have the birth cert. of Annie Louisa Herschell , born in 1886. Her father was Alexander Herschell and her Mother Mary Herschell , ( nee Reilly. ) Annie was born in Birkenhead County of Chester. I have tried for weeks with no sucsess to find either birth or marriage records for Alexander and Mary , but no sucsess. Ive been on the Scotland site too. We think they could have been either travellers or gypsies. Would that explain the difficulty and how would I get any records if this was so. ?
                             Can anybody help me !

Have you found them on the 1891 census yet?  That would give you both parents ages and birth places - at least a rough idea, allowing for lies and subterfuge of course.  I think this should be your first line of enquiry.

Herschell is a German name in origin.

There are some 'Herschel' families b. Scotland on 1901, including what looks like an Alexander and Mary with several children (no Annie though).  What was Alexander's occupation in 1886?

There's also an Annie Hershall, b. Birkenhead, aged 17, in Broughton, Lancaster in 1901.  Age slightly off, but a possible? No other Hershalls in the region.

Hello there,

I have found an Alexander Herschell and a Mary Henshaw's marriage on the Cheshire BMD board in 1891-95. Did Annie's mum die and dad remarry?

Try http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

There are a few with that surname- maybe if you try different spellings you might find more  :D

Good luck,

Carol

I'm presuming you have the family in 1881 in York?

RG11 / 4837 folio 60 page 21.

Both Alexander and Mary and the older kids are born in Scotland,so my bet is that they were married there too. Prob around 1870-71.

Yes , I found Annie in a home for destitute women in Broughton. I also found the Herschell family in York .with the eldest children born in all different parts of Scotland , but minus Annie . Not sure whether they are the ones though . Alexander's ccupation on Annie's birth cert. is construction labourer.
If by any chance they were gypsies or travellers , where would I go from here ? Be grateful for any help at all.

Annie wasn't born till 1886,so won't be on the 1881 census of course!
Do you have a marriage cert for her? If so who are the witnesses, and what other info does it have on it?

Do the names in the 1881 York census ring any bells in the names she gave her kids?
