Have you tried asking for an 1871 look up in Scotland- maybe Aberdeen,as that's where daughter Margaret was born c 1871/2

Here they are in 1881,but I'm surprised by their address,a hut?
They seem to have a servant.Very odd

thanks valda the 1891 census entry you found looks the most promising . its the only record i have that mentions annie herself . now i have found her on the 1901 census as an inmate in a home for destitute women in broughton cheshire . have you any suggestions how i could find out more ?

Broughton is I believe in Lancashire so you could try the Lancashire Record Office

to see whether they or any other record office may have records for the home Annie was residing in, in 1901.

Though I can't see a baptism for Alexander on the IGI there is a possibility for his wife Mary.

I would also check for Alexander in Scotland on the 1871 census as Carol suggested (bearing in mind there was another Alexander Herschell (who was a draper's assistant) also born in Scotland circa 1846 and any previous censuses he can be found.

I can't see Alexander on the 1901 census. Had he returned to Scotland?
