Whitmore 1871 Please
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 11:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi

So far I have this:

Marriages Dec 1887

IVES Harry Bedford 3b 611
Whitmore Elizabeth Bedford 3b 611

1891 Census

Piece: RG12/1251 Place: Bedford-Bedfordshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: St Mary Ecclesiastical Parish: St. Mary
Folio: 15 Page: 24 Schedule: 141
Address: 40 Little Butt Street

IVES Harry Head M M 24 Coal Porter (Em'ee) Renhold
IVES Elizabeth Wife M F 22 Bolnhurst
IVES Horace Son - M 2   Bedford
IVES Richard - (Brother) S M 18 Carman (Em'ee) Renhold

I am not sure that the marriage relates to the census as I can't find anything in the IGI. I know there were at least 2 Harry Ives' born in Bedfordshire around the time and both appear in the 1881 Census. (The second being born and living in Eaton)

There are Whitmore's in Bolnhurst in 1861 but obviously not Elizabeth b. abt 1869. A lookup up for he Whitmores in 1871 would be helpful and any reference for a marriage.

Cheers Rob

The other Harry Ives born Eaton on the 1891 census is unmarried.
On the 1871 census there is one Elizabeth Whitmores born Bolnhurst and and in Bolnhurst and one Eliza.

Eliza Whitmore was born circa 1865 and living with her parents
The other is Elizabeth A. Whitemore born circa 1869 and living with her aunt and uncle, brother and sister, who are very young themselves, 22 and 18. There is another niece present Alice who is 16. There are two other Whitmore families on the same page.

It is not unheard of for someone to marry not using their second name. It is also not unheard of for Elizabeths to be Elizas on censuses and for people to move their ages around, especially if their spouse is younger or older than them. So the 1871 census does not give you a definitive answer.
On first check of the 1881 census only Eliza Whitmore now a servant in Camberwell is showing.

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda,

Thanks for your quick response. It looks like Elizabeth A. Whitemore is the most likely as "my" Elizabeth is listed as Elizabeth A. Ives in the 1901 Census;

RG13/1489 Folio 16 Page 24 Schedule 167

Can you please give me the transcription for Elizabeth A ?

Cheers Rob

I see Elizabeth A. in 1901 had a Whitmore staying with her in the household

Lucy Whitmore 14  Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Sister-in-law

The only Lucy Whitmore I can see who this might be in 1891 is

RG12 1253 folio 60
East End Wilden  Bedfordshire
Whitmore, Lucy 42 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Head  Single Charwoman
Whitmore, Sarah 17 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Daughter
Whitmore, Thomas 13 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Son
Whitmore, Eliza 11 Wilden, Bedfordshire, Daughter
Whitmore, Annie 8 Wilden, Bedfordshire, Daughter
Whitmore, Lucy 6 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Daughter
Whitmore, Walter 3 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Son

1881 RG11 1625 folio 77
2 Church Row, Wilden, Bedfordshire
Lucy Whitmore 32  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Housekeeper (Head) Unmarried Lacemaker
William Whitmore 9  Wilden, Bedfordshire, Son
Sarah J. Whitmore 6 Wilden, Bedfordshire, Daughter
Thomas Whitmore 3 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Son
Eliza Whitmore 11  Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Daughter

'Housekeeper' to William Fuller and his 9 year old daughter

1871 census RG10 1537 folio 54
15 High Road Bolnhurst  Bedfordshire
William Whitmore 18  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Head  Unmarried
Lucy Whitmore 20  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire,  Sister  Unmarried
Elizabeth A Whitmore 2  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire,  Niece
Alice Whitmore 16  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Niece

It therefore seems a possibility that Elizabeth A was  Lucy's first child and is the 11 year old Eliza of the 1881 census? The Lucy on the census of 1901 - given as her sister-in-law, in modern term usage would be a step sister or in this case a half sister i.e. a sister-in-law but not a full sister.

1861 census RG9 985 folio 58
Street Bolnhurst  Bedfordshire
Samuel Whitmore 54  Thurleigh, Bedfordshire,  Head  Married Ag lab
Jane Whitmore 51  Great Staughton, Huntingdonshire,  Wife  Married lacemaker
Sophia Whitmore 28  Keysoe, Bedfordshire,  Daughter Lacemaker
Ann Whitmore 25  Keysoe, Bedfordshire,  Daughter Lacemaker
Joseph Whitmore 23  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Son  Ag lab
Emmanuel Whitmore 19  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Son  Ag lab
Thomas Whitmore 15  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Son   Ag lab
Lucy Whitmore 12  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Daughter  Lacemaker
William Whitmore 8  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Son
Alice Whitmore 7  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire,  Daughter
George Whitmore 4  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Son
Lewis Whitmore 3  Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Daughter
Harriet Whitmore 1  Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, Daughter

Next door James Whitmore aged 57  born Bolnhurst and his wife born Keysoe and their son.

1901 census RG13 1495 folio 19
Village Wilden  Bedfordshire
Lucy Whitmore 52 Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire, Head Single Charwoman
Walter Whitmore 12 Wilden, Bedfordshire,  Son

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda,

Thanks for your very extensive reply.

I was obviously only half awake this morning, when I missed Lucy in the 1901 census -  :-[

Looks like the correct  GRO ref. then. Now I just have to sort out the "Whitmore Dynasty"! I'll take my time to check it all out, but thanks so much for all your work.

Cheers Rob
