« on: Sunday 22 January 06 22:28 GMT (UK) »
Could someone kindly look-up the 1841 Census for a William PARSONS b. 1833 Swallowfield Berkshire - parents John PARSONS and Hannah Wells.

William born 1833 Swallowfield, Berkshire
Emigrated to Australia in 1855 stating that father was dead and mother was living in London.

Can't find any records of this family on 1851 census.

thanking you,
Gail

Hello Gail,
I'm going to the Record Office tomorrow and could look this up for you then, do you still need it?
Newbie
I won't do it until I hear from you, because it isn't indexed.

Hi Newbie,

I would be extremely grateful if you could do the look-up for me as this is one of those frustrating brick walls.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Hello Gail,
I went yesterday and checked the film for you at the BRO
Swallowfield, HO107/13/8
Started folio 4 (previous were just the introduction pages)
finished folio 11.

I couldn't see any Parsons at all, lots of Thatchers, Cobbs and others.
ON the film box, it notes all the parishes on this film. Film 2.
there are many before we get to our interest
Swallowfield, Riseley, Farley Hill, Swallowfield, Farley Hill,
East Ilsley, Compton  etc...after I checked the first Swallowfield I went off looking for the next part, but there was no next part! never found Riseley or Farley Hill either, did ask Archivist to check and she confirmed, either an error on the box or on the film?
So sorry, not found.  The pages are v.feint in places, hardly readable.

Hello Newbie,

Thank you very much for your kind look-up. It is appreciated.

Does the fact that the PARSONS weren't found mean they were not in that area in 1841 or is it just that the records have been misplaced or, as you say, unreadable?

All the best,
Gail

Hello Gail,
It just means I didn't see them listed on that part of the census film that I checked. I  didn't check the whole of the film as that would probably take an awfully long time.  It was only a small part of it - Swallowfield. I made a note that listed on the final page were several families of - Tramps (under Occupation), Living in Tents,  mostly with the name of Marks.
Until the 1841 becomes available indexed for Berkshire it would be a very difficult task to find them, and then they may not even be in Berkshire? Once Ancestry put it online for England you may find him then, apparently it's due this year.
Have you found his baptism record? that might give some clues, would you like me to check these for you, but which area - Swallowfield?
Newbie :)

Hi again Newbie,

Yes, I understand that the checking would take a long time and I really appreciate what you did.

Yes, I've checked the IGI and the Census(es)?? but can't make any headway. I didn't realise it was possible to look up baptism records so again, a big thank you for your offer.

All the best,
Gail
