Gail,
You are very welcome, sorry the news was not better, I think we will have to wait for the 1841 to help solve this problem, but have you checked the General Register Indexes for the death of a John Parsons, or the remarriage of Hannah?
if I can help again do let me know,  I will keep an eye out for your William in the 1841!

Newbie ;D

Oh, sorry, the General Register Indexes, record the information you need to obtain a birth marriage or death certificate.  The indexes are held at the Family Records Centre in Islington, but most local Archives hold either just their area, or the England and Wales set.  Scotland is different.
They are also available online at these links (some are pay to view sites)

http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/HomeServlet

https://www.familyrelatives.org/treequest/jsp/customer/index.jsp

there is the free site FreeBMD, but it is not complete, it's being transcribed by volunteers but is always worth checking first.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

and at the moment Ancestry has made all of the indexes (complete) available online free! it is only a BETA test version and there are a few glitches, but its usually possible to overcome these.
try  www.ancestry.co.uk, scroll down and its on the right hand side of the page.

the indexes are divided into years, and then each year into quarters,  Mar, June, Sept, Dec.  from 1837 each event, birth marriage or death has (or should have been) registered, the entry will include the name, and quarter, and year of registration, the District the registration took place in, the volume no, and the page no of the entry. from that info you can obtain a certificate.  for births from 1912 (?) the mothers maiden name was also included, and for deaths, from 1866(?) age was given, later date of birth was given.

I think if you tried the Beginners board here on R.C. there is a lot of information about using the indexes.
Once you have found a possible entry you can also order a certificate online.
Does that help?

I found this link quite helpful when I started..

I just thought certificates may help, you said William's father John had died, if he did post 1837 there should be a registration for him, but we still have the problem of not knowing where he may have died, so which district would the registration have taken place? but it may be worth looking ? maybe see if Hannah remarried?

Me again Newbie,

Just before I rush out the door - thanks for the information. (We actually are volunteer transcribers (well not so much me,as Bob) for the FreeBMDs.

Will have a good look at what you've given me later today.

Bye for now,
Gail

Hi Newbie,

A thought!

I suppose I could go to the London rootschat site and see if anyone could do a look-up for Old Church, St Pancras, London for William's christening in 1854? Is that a possibility, do you think?

And would his parents names be on it?

All the best,
Gail

I did think about that, it's worth a try.  The Records would be at the London Metropolitan Archives though (I think?)
although someone on the London Board may have copies of transcriptions (if they've been transcribed by the local family history society - I have some for Horningsham Parish Church in Wiltshire)

I have a trip planned for the LMA in the future, but not sure when, and I've never been before....

Most baptisms usually say the forename, the Father and Mothers Forename (or just the Mothers), the F & M Surname,
the Fathers occupation, and their abode, sometimes just the village.

this link will show you an example
http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/registers/indexf.htm

"Biker" is the moderator on the London Board, he is very knowledgeable about London sources. so I would try posting and see what happens..

I'm trying to think of another way to say thank you, Newbie ... THANK YOU - so I'd thought I'd  ask for another look-up!

(See Hungerford site)

I know, I know, I'm spoiling you!  ;D

All the best,
Gail
