looking for a will in Kent
« on: Monday 23 January 06 01:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

Have been absent from here for awhile but am just picking up the addiction to genealogy again now.

My next step is to locate a will for my Thomas Hall who died 18 th November 1854 in  West Ashford, Kent. He is buried at Hothfield.
I have just ordered his death cert from England.

I am presuming he had a will because he was a solicitor and also a registrar and relieving officer.

My question is where to start looking. I had a look at the National Archives website. Gee that confused me even more.

Can anyone give me some ideas please. Sorry if this question sounds abit daft but am totally lost when looking for a will.

Kind regards

Assuming his will was proved before 1858.  It will probably be in Canterbury Cathedral Archives.  It might however be worth doing a search online at the national archives documents online site.  Sorry I don't have the new address to hand.  It used to be:

www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk

What you have to be careful about is Ashford was in the Archdeaconry of Canterbury and so wills which only cover local property will be there rather than the Lambeth Palace archives which are on line.
