1841 Windsor Census, Dovey
« on: Tuesday 24 January 06 19:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Please can someone help me? My Dovey family appear on this census but I am unable to read the copy someone has kindly sent to me. Unfortunately, Stephen dies before 1851 so I would like to know the details:
HO 107/26/1 folio 16 pg 25
Stephen Dovey
Martha...
The children from Stephen age 8 appear on the following page and this I am able to read.
Thank you very much.
regards,
Pauline

Hello Pauline (Good name that! ;))
I went to the Berks Record Office today here is your lookup

First I checked the transcription of the 1841 Windsor (this is I think a volunteer Transcription, it says on the front cover "Attempted Transcription", the only Dovey family I could find were
T/A 148 - BRO Ref.
Grove Place.
Jane aged 25 years, Born in County - N
Caroline, age 5,  - N,
Martha age 7 - N,
Eliza 8months - N,
Jane 8 months - N

so I checked the film
Film 7 1841 HO107/26/1 folio 16 p25
New Windsor, Clewer.
Clewer Lane.
Stephen Dovey   Age 44; Occupation-  Smith J; Born in County - N
Martha Dovey 41, - N
Benjamin Dovey 14 - N

Next page
Stephen Dovey age 8, Born in County - N
Charles Dovey 6, N,
Thomas Dovey 3, - N
Ellen Dovey, 5 months, - Y.

The occupation for Stephen was difficult to determine but I thought it said Smith  and it was definitely a J, so asked the archivist to check, she agreed Smith J.
I didn't have time to go back to the transcription but they may be mistranscribed as Davey?
Hope that helps,
Newbie

Hi

Thank you very much, that is just what I wanted.  Also, I knew there was another Dovey family in the area so you have sorted that out for me as well.

I have Stephen's occupation down on a birth certificate as 'Smith' but I wonder what the 'J' stands for? He appeared to travel a great deal, perhaps 'Journeyman'?

Yes, Dovey gets mistranscribed as Davey all the time! Luckily Stephen was not too common a name at that time.

Thanks again for your help.

regards,
Pauline
ps only another Pauline could admire the name!

Hello Pauline
Yes I think Smith Journeyman is the right occupation, there was another entry above for a Carpenter J.
As far as I understand, a Journeyman was someone who was not a regular employee but a casual employee.  I remember the question was posted on the board a while ago and that was the expert opinion.
or I found this  :  which differs from my understanding!
journeyman
A man who served his apprenticeship in a trade and worked as a fully qualified employee. The term originated in the regulations of the medieval trade guilds; it derives from the French journée (‘a day’) because journeymen were paid daily.

Each guild normally recognized three grades of worker – apprentices, journeymen, and masters. As a qualified tradesman, a journeyman might have become a master with his own business but most remained employees.

or this link is good
http://www.census1891.com/occupations-j.htm
journeyman - one who served his apprenticeship and mastered his craft - time served.
in other words fully qualified.

I'm glad the census info was helpful.
good luck
Newbie :)
