World War 1
« on: Thursday 26 January 06 20:50 GMT (UK) »
I had some ancestors from Coatbridge and am wondering if they served in WW1 as I have been unable to trace them since the 1901 Census?

Does anyone know if there is a  way I can find out if they joined up and possibly what happened to them.

Any help would be welcomed.

Hi there,

You can try looking on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site to see if they died in action.  I have found a couple of rellies that had 'vanished' on there.

Hi there,

Other things you might be able to do are...

Search on the National Archives site to see if there are any medals for your ancestors at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

Or, put a post on the Armed Forces board here to see if anyone can guide you to which regiment people from Coatbridge were likely to have signed up to and if they can point you in the right direction of how to find out if they did indeed join up.  My family are from Glasgow and they all seemed to join the Highland Light Infantry.

Best of luck.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare

Thanks for latest websites, will give them a try.

Also liked your idea about the armed forces, will give that a go to.
