Handwriting Help
« on: Sunday 29 January 06 21:13 GMT (UK) »
Greetings:

I am trying to determine the name that is signed/written on the first line of column 7. I know the first two names are: "Annie Rennie" . The next mark throws me off then looks like ??? Then, below on line 2 of same column, is "Imrie"  (her born name).

If the image does not appear in this post it is at:

Any Help or ideas would be appreciated.

I was wondering if it was a first attempt at writing "Imrie" on the top line.

Thanks for the looks.  I agree with you both :P.  I take it the name was actually Annies signature. I was originally thinking she spelled "Emrie" and then was corrected to Imrie. I thought the first letter was a symbol used to show "replaced" or "should be" ... It looks very similar to an old Prefix pro- symbol :

According to 1901 census she was unmarried at 66 So. Portland St. with Mary (and named as Wilson) . I ran a marriage search on SP for Annie and have not seen any (male names) name that come close.

As PB said - I think she "ran out of room" when writing her name so repeated the surname on the next line

I am wondering whether Annie (probably quite upset at the time) made a slight mess of signing the surname part of her name.  I think the 'Imrie' written on the line below could be in the nature of an explanatory note written by the Registrar (or someone else - and might even have been pencilled in?).  Note the 'r' as signed by Annie and how very different it is from the 'r' in the name 'Imrie' in the line below; however the 'r' in the line below is quite like the Registrar's 'r'.  Also, the writing in the line below is quite upright whereas Annie's signature slopes to the right.

Thank you for the help.  Now I have to figure out what happened to Annie.
