Apprenticeships
« on: Monday 30 January 06 10:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone know if apprenticeships in the 1800's had to be paid for by parents, or was it done through the Parish?

Hi Jim,
I think I'm right in saying, the apprentice would work under the Master of the particular trade without salary only his/her bed & board, in exchange for hands-on tuition from the master until the apprentiship was completed.  So nobody actually paid for it.

Hi Jim & Jane

According to my 'Oracle'

The apprenticeship indenture was a legal document which bound a boy to a master, with a premium paid to the master by the boys parents (or, in the case of a pauper by the overseer of the poor)
The boy received board and lodging and his training.  He was forbidden to marry or to set up his own business until the completion of his term

Here are a few examples from my Lewes Apprenticeships data base
