Hi Chris, this is a very old thread so I'm not sure whether anyone will see it (I'm new to rootschat).

I believe I may be a descendent of Stephen White and Margaret Vass and am trying to do some digging around on their lives after arriving in Van Deamons Land (Tasmania).

I note that Frances in her quoted email refers to Margaret Vass as 'Margaret ANDERSON'.  I wonder if that is just a typo or is there another name I'm not aware of?  I've only ever encountered the family name 'Vass' in connection with Margaret.

I'm also keen to learn anything about Margaret's family.  She is said to have been born in either Bombay or Madrass.

Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Rowan (ozone).

Hi Shari

Have just received a long e-mail concerning your ancestors from another source - copied in full below.

If you would like to send me your e-mail address (via private message) I will pass it on to the writer of the e-mail who can contact you direct.

This is that e-mail

Hello Chris,

I have just had a quick look at the Rootschat, and thank you for the info of
what you hold.  However, quickly glancing through the messages, I would like
to point out a slight error in your response to Shari.  you have the point
that Joseph married to Sarah, but it is not the Joseph s/o William and
Sarah, as he did not marry under the name Joseph.

The Joseph that married Sarah HOSE in 1814 is in fact the s/o James and
Bridget.

A friend and I did a lot of work on this family about three/four years back
and Joseph s/o Sarah should have been entered as Stephen, and you will find
Stephen's second marriage to Margaret ANDERSON in Ore 5 July 1827.  His
first marriage being on Tristan da Cunha, the date eludes me at the moment,
but it is thought that William wouldn't recognise the marriage.

This was all sorted out with the help of a will and other sources, but out
of interest, Stephen would never collected the £50.00 left to him, as he had
to return in person within six months to collect it, and as he was over in
OZ at the time, it wouldn't have been possible, even if he had known about
it.

If it is possible and Shari could contact me directly, I can put her in
touch with other descendants of Stephen, who are over in Tasmania as well as
other places in OZ.

Sincere regards,

Frances

Over to you

Hello Chris,
I'm new to rootschat and in 2004 you and others had disscussed the White family in in some detail, and I'm a decendent of william and sarah and then through the stephen and margaret line and I had a few questions for you. I was wondering where I might be able to view birth and marriage records of the white family and also how I might be able to get in contact with Frances who it seem sent you an email clarifying a little mix up and she said that her source was a will, how might i view that will, she alluded to stephen white being born as joseph white?
any help would be great.
Thank you
Seth (Tasmania, Australia)

Hi swool

Hi All,

I have recently started doing my Tree and have come across Margaret Vass ? and Stephen White.

Reading your forum I have found that I'm another 4th Generation Great-Grandchild also doing the same Tree, different Branch.
Stephen White born 1821-22 is my 3rd Great Grandfather.
I'm looking for someone to swap information with in regards to the English Branches. or Anything on Margaret Vass (or whichever name she seems to go under)
Any Help would be Muchly Appreciated.

Thanks for your time.
Morgan.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, revived and now getting old again but you have to try these things sometimes.   :-\

Was Margaret Vass who 'married' Stephen White on Tristan Da Cunha in a ceremony by an unauthorised official the same person as Margaret ANDERSON who married Stephen White in Ore on 05 July 1827?

They left Tristan Da Cunha in 1826 so seems very plausible.

I'm researching a man who is sometimes called LIND and sometimes ANDERSON, he deserted from a whaler in 1839 and raised a family on Tristan Da Cunha.  Which of course is 13 years after Stephen and Peggy left but there are a few mysteries about him so I'm looking into everything even if to eliminate false trails.

Would love to hear from anyone who has researched this before me.  Especially, if it is so, why she used that surname?
