I did a search on Scotlands People under Glasgow City and searched for a two year spread, going on what was on the census. I then narrowed it down to a particular year. There were too many Mary's to pinpoint.

I am trying to see if I can find James' siblings on the census.

yes the second one is mine the father Robert Douglas died 1864  age 70 years I have his death cert and mother Mary Douglas nee Scot she died 1868 both died Dryfesdale never found a marriage for Robert & Mary been searching for weeks Roberts father was William Douglas b Cavers Roxburgh  and his mother Margaret Pott also born Cavers no marriage for them either

I could not find marriage for either William Douglas & Margaret Pott, or Robert Douglas & Mary Scott.

Janice when I put the shout out for a lookup I never expected so much info many thanks I have seen this family of Alexander but some thing tells me that its not the right one as non of the names have ever been used by my Douglas family and they do seem to of stuck rigidly to naming patterns over the generations so I do need to find a marriage to find the parents of William Douglas b 1797 the death cert said Cavers but all the census say Hawick so I have to pursue this further  Thank you so much for taking the time to help most grateful
