1900 NY census. Two Herman TILLs

1900 census New York

Is there any way of searching this census on line to see who was resident at 239 East 115 Street?

There was a Herman Till (a tailor) resident at that address prior to his death in Harlem Hospital on 9.April.1907.  This Herman was aged 50, i.e. b.c. 1857.

In 1900, there was another Herman Till (a furrier) at 323 East 55th Street.  This Herman died at Bellevue Hospital on 30.Nov.1901.  He was aged 40, i.e. b.c. 1861.

I found the furrier, but not the tailor, on the NY 1900 census.  To complicate matters, the furrier’s birth year was 1857.

Just to confuse matters further, an 1888 New York Passenger List shows Herman Till, tailor, aged 26 (i.e. b.c. 1861/62) arrived in NY on “City of Chester” from Liverpool.

Thanks from Moltom.

Moltom, I found this link that states the 12th ward was located above 86th street.  I attempted to find the address by skipping through the 12th ward census but came up empty.  I found some addresses at the 300 level of 115th, but couldn't find the 200s.  Maybe someone else will have better luck.-----Genealiza

There is a map if you scroll down the page that pinpoints the various wards.

Here are a couple of links to help find ward boundaries in 1900 period.  I would suggest prining out a map off MapQuest or whatever you use and drawing in the boundaries used arond 1900.   Many street names are the same. Just the wards are constantly changing.

Dear Nutkin,

Are New York monumental inscriptions available to search?

Herman Till the furrier was buried at Linden Hill Cemetery on 4.Dec.1901.

Herman Till the tailor was buried at Silver Lake Cemetery on 10.April.1907.

I have details of age, parentage, etc from both death certs, but perhaps other family members would be mentioned on the MIs.

Thanks from Moltom

I tried to find a website for the cemeteries to no luck.  Here are the addresses of the cemeteries.  I would write them a letter and ask for the burial records. I have done it for other cemeteries and asked for everyone buried in the lot.  Sometimes gives you other family members to look for.

Linden Hill Cemetery
201 E Broadway
New York, NY 10002-5507

phone 212-477-2800
There are others of the same name in NYC. Do you know which borough? AS there is one in Flushing Queens also and Jewish.

Linden Hill  ,Founded c. 1850    County: Queens
52-22 Metropolitan Avenue, Ridgewood, NY  11385
phone is  718-821-2279
Founded by Congregation Ahavat Chesed/Central Synagogue

The one called Silver Lake is a Jewish Cemetery. Not sure if your ancestor was Jewish. Here is the contact information for Staten Island (suburb of NYC)

Silver Lake Cemetery ,  Founded 1890 's    County: Richmond
926 Victory Blvd., Staten Island, NY  10301
Silver Lake is a 'full cemetery' and is closed to new burials.  The office burned down but records are available through the Hebrew Free Burial Association and from the cemetery office at Mt. Richmond Cemetery.  See: Mt. Richmond Cemetery

Hebrew Free Burial Association, No. 501, 1170 Broadway N.Y. 10002

(212) 686-2433
Hope this is of some help.-Kristin

I just checked the 1900 census-

On East 55th Street, the was Herman Till who was a boarder in the house. He was a furrier. Immigrated 1891, petitioned for naturalization. Born in Germany Dec 1857.

I was not able to find the other Herman in the 1900. Maybe others would have better luck.

Thanks Nutkin,

I managed to find the furrier and for a while, thought he was my great-grandfather.

Can't understand why Herman the tailor doesn't appear.  Unless, of course, he was on a visit to his family in England.

I hadn't realised the furrier petitioned for naturalisation, so will have another look on Ancestry for such records.

In the mean time, I've written to the Hebrew Free Burial Association to see if their records give info about other members of the Till family.
