I have been stuck here a very long time so would be grateful if anybody has any ideas for the supposed Hertfordshire birthplace (2nd line down) for William Gulliver HEYDON bc1822-1829 (1851 census Margate, Kent HO107/1629 folio 187 page 15)

Hi Casalguidi  :)
Looks like Oxey to me , near Bushey.
Looks as if the enumerator had St Vitis Dance ???

Hi Casalguidi

What a terrible scrawl! :o  If the county weren't Herts, I would say Oxford, but.....it is!!!

The only parishes that I can think of beginning with "Ox" in Herts are Oxhey and Oxlease.  I suppose it is just possible that the first letter is "A" or "D" but even then I am struggling to think of where it could be.  Perhaps someone else will have more luck.

Sorry
Rick :)

I'm sorry, I can't offer any useful interpretation except - have you found him on any other census? Were there any brothers and sisters (possibly born same place) that you could follow.

Good luck anyway,
Di

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  Unfortunately William died just a couple of years after the 1851 census and the earliest sighting I have for him is late 1840s when he married his (local) wife in Kent.  I have a feeling that he may well have ventured down to Kent with the arrival of the railways mid 1840s - he was an ostler and ticket porter.  A number of parishes in the Oxney area have been searched for his baptism but that was some time ago - will have to get my old paper notes out to confirm which ones ::)

I, too, have thought about Oxfordshire - particularly Hethe - a GULLIVER (wife nee HEYDON) resident there at about the right time but ???

This is probably way off but it's not Watford is it. Definitely looks like ford on the end.

Just a thought because of the railway connection & Watford Junction.

Funny you should say that Maddie.

Watford was the first thing I thought of when I looked at it, but after reading the other answers, I figured I was way off the mark.

Maybe we aren't really mad?

Hi Casalguidi  :)
Had a look at the actual 1851 census and It appears to be OXTON Kent, whish is only 11 Miles from Folkestone and 15 miles from Margate.
