Hi Casalguidi  :)
Had a look at the actual 1851 census and It appears to be OXTON Kent, whish is only 11 Miles from Folkestone and 15 miles from Margate.

                       Patricia  :)

Patricia

It may well be Oxton or Oxney, Kent.......but......the original document certainly seems to say Herts and not Kent.  Therein lies the problem surely. :-\

Have you considered that it is not Herts but "Heath" or "Hethe" in Oxford(shire)? I say this because in my wife's tree, there is a William Gulliver of Hethe (1803-1873) who married an Ann Heydon (1804-1874) in Oxford in Nov 1826. I have 9 children to this marriage with the first, John, arriving in 1828.
It's possible that she (ann) could be the (illegitimate) mother and that your William was "adopted" by William Gulliver (probably because he was the real father) but kept the Heydon surname. Food for thought eh?

Hi Philnw

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Yes, I have considered that he may well have been the son of the family you mention but I just haven't been able to find anything to prove it :(

Furthermore, one of his grandchildren was named Vincent and, although not conclusive proof of a connection of course (Vincent appears in the Hethe family), it is not a name found in other lines of "our" family anywhere :-\

According to William Gulliver HEYDON's marriage, his father was William HEYDON (occupation something like baker or butler - hard to read) but, of course, this was only the information given by WGH at the time.

I did have a look at the 1841 census but couldn't immediately see anything helpful/conclusive there either :(

Hi all,

I know it's 4 years late, but it reads Duxford to me.
Maybe handwriting / geography weren't strong points.

Was Duxford ever in Herts?

Ray

It's not too late as I'm still looking to confirm his birthplace ;D

Duxford is really interesting .............. from what I see on the map it's quite near the Hertfordshire border so I shall bear that in mind - thanks :)

Morning All,

I think it's Margate Kent. The scrawl is actually what it  says it is, scrawl i.e deletion because of a mistake. Next to the scrawl there's a ditto under the Margate sitting in the line above. All the Kents look like Herts to me although they're obviously not. Is Kents short for Kentshire? The other thing is that all the remaining children were born Kent.

Benzol
Herts Barnes/Baines Bottom(s) Dawson Odell (Pirton, Sandon)
Somerset Bull Churchill Ferguson Palmer (Crewkerne, Misterton)
Scotland McNaughton Douglas Archer Robertson (Perth)

Benzol, I think it definitely says Herts and I can be 99.9% certain that he wasn't born in Margate.

Ray, do you have any further details from this 1841 census entry ............. just in case though I do feel he may have been a bit younger than 21 at the time.  He actually died in Margate in 1854 and his wife, as you suggest, returned to her native Folkestone with the surviving children ............. I have all the census details for his wife and children already thanks.
