Transferring FTM info to another computer
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 13:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have Family Tree Maker version 3.02 for windows on my computer. I've been using it for years and have loads of information on it. My Dad has just got Family Tree maker 12th edition on his computer and wants me to input all the information from mine onto his. How do I do that without having to sit and print all mine off, then type it all out onto his? It'd take me hours! I thought i could save it onto floppy, but my Dad's new computer doesn't have a floppy drive, and my computer is so old that it doesn't have the facility to save it onto c.d! I do have one of those flash key things (not its technical name, obviously!) that you plug into the usb port. Would i be able to save it onto that, then transfer it over to my Dad's?
I'm not a very technical person, so any help would be great!
Thanks,
Jacdee

I don't know what size your flash drive is, bur a FTW file as such could well be over 1MB.
If your version of Family TreeMaker allows you to export your files as GEDCOM then do that.
Copy the file to your flash drive (it's amazing how much smaller the GEDCOM file will be.)
Get your dad to open up a new file in Family TreeMaker and he can then import the GEDCOM straight in.

Thanks!
I'm not sure what size the flash drive is either!
Sounds simple enough! I'll give it a go tomorrow when my Dad's around.
Thanks again. You've saved me hours of typing!

Hi Jacdee

I use an older version of FTM
Left click on the help button on the toolbar and you should see Family File Status
This will tell you what size your current FTM file is. Check your dongle (flash drive)for size. It should be printed on it and you will be able to estimate whether it has the capacity to allow you to transfer.
If too big you could split your family files into new files and transfer in one or two bits.

Good luck

Thanks for your advice.
I did manage to transfer all the info via the flash key thing and it has loaded all the information into the new format without any problems! I was so pleased that i didn't have to type it all out again!

Thankyou both for your help,
Jacdee
