Hannah BRIGGS was John HUMPHRIES younger sister- both born in Somerset then migrated to Ont. The BRIGGs & HUMPHRIES are  buried in graves adjacent in the Blue Ch Cem.

Yes, Mary Hopkins was the maiden name of the widow, Mary Graham, who married John Humphries.

In 1871 Ont.  census John H. is in the house of his nephew, Thomas JOYCE.

John HUMPHRIES left his money to his nephew John Charles Wesley Humphries b 1845, Ont.  and to his gt nephew George Albert Percy b 1867, Ottawa[son of JCWH].
These last two have vanished as far as I can tell- have made searches of census, cem records and so on- any ideas where I might look next would be welcome as they are the only likely link to 20thC.

Thanks for your interest and help.

Charlotte

John Charles Wesley HUMPHRIES   - married Alexia May Thoms / 20 Sept. 1866 .

actually, you might do a search through this ladies' site ( she is no longer with us, so I like to think of how pleased she'd be when information i can't find anywhere else pops up on her site...she'd be thrilled, no doubt!)

JJ and Karen,
Thank for the info and lookups- you have indeed found my HUMPHRIES- and as for someone strangling John H. , being frivolous, it doesn't surprise me. He was a womnaiser of the worst type.

The George H. in Ottawa, carriage maker, was John H's younger brother. It seems the Humphries migrated to Ont from 1830 onwards in dribs and drabs but they stayed close as most of them are in the family grave in the Blue Ch Cem including the parents.
Apart from the John Charles Wesley and his son, none seem to have left living descendants. I can't find either of  them in 1901 or 1911 census. I have also looked on Commonwealth War Graves site to see if there are descendants died in WW! but no joy.

Any further suggestions if where to hunt I'd appreciate and I'll follow up the links you have so kindly suggested already.
Thanks agian,
Charlotte

Hi, Charlotte...Glad we made some progress...
Did you check out the child board for Canada resources?
Just go back to the link to immigrants to Canada...and you'll see it...
Lots to look through, yet...never know what you can glean from those...
