Harmer
« on: Thursday 23 September 04 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hi again
Another request for 1851 census please - this time the Harmer family  in Hastings with almost identical names to the Harvey family posted earlier:
George,Ann and Elizabeth.
Have only just started on this branch and am wondering, as the 2 families are connected,  if the names handed down to me by family may have got intermingled somewhere along the way.
Hope this isn't too confusing.

Hi L

Not sure whether these are is of any interest to you:

HO107 1636, Folio 516, Page 89 - Lavatory, St Mary Magdalen
George, 31, Plaster's Lab, born Playden, Frances 30 and Children

HO107 1636, Folio 584, Page 143 - 8 Shephard Street, St Leonards
Thomas 38, Plaster, born Chidingly, Anne 31 born Bexhill and Family

Harmer Elizabeth, Servant, 20, born Ashburnham

Harmer, Elizabeth, Lodger, 71, House Keeper, born Hastings.

Harmer Ann, Serv, 20, born Hurstmonceux

Harmer George, Inmate, 24, Baker, born Southhampton, Union Workhouse

These are the only ones that appear in Hastings & St Leonards with the names you mentioned

In Burtons New town of St Leonards, the servants area was know as 'Lavatoria' - but I see from the above it was shortened to Lavatory

Thanks for that Chris
I'm not too sure how they fit together yet but there may well be some link. All I have to go on at the moment is a copy of the birth certificate of Elizabeth Ann for 2.12.1845 which gives her birth place as the Barrack Ground and her parents as George Harmer and Ann formerly Martin. He was an illiterate labourer and that is all I know, save that Elizabeth was the grandmother of my grandfather.
I'll keep at it. I guess its possible that the George & Frances could be relevant if Ann died... will look into that possiblilty.

Hi L

As the crow flies, The site of the Barrack Ground is about 200 yards from where I live up in Ore Village - it is now Flats called Halton Flats.

Just a bit of background history on the Barrack Ground from my University papers:

Halton Barracks
In 1795, 30 Acres of the Gallows Field at the Mount Road end of Halton was sold to the government to build a barracks, these being first occupied in 1804.
In 1823 the Halton barracks were sold for a quarter of their cost to Boykett Breeds and Co. who demolished them, thus making way for the development of Halton.

Immediately adjoining the Turnpike Gate is the ground which was formerly occupied by the Barracks, but on which a Town of considerable size, extending a quarter of a mile, has been erected within a short period. The greater part of these houses are of a small description, and are inhabited by the lower classes. The houses which were built on the derelict land adjoining the Sea, in the parish of Holy Trinity, (America Ground) have been pulled down, and the inhabitants have removed to the Barrack Ground, which will partly account for the great increase in that quarter: (Report upon the proposed Municipal Boundary and Division into Wards of the Town & Port of Hastings c.1840)

For some information on the America Ground and why over 1000 people moved from there in 1835 see my web page

Am still looking for your Harmer family though

Hi L

How about this then

HO107 1635/ Folio 350/ Page 189 - 4 Summer Hill, Hastings.

HARMAN George, Head, Marr, 40, Ag Lab, born Heathfield.
Ann, Wife, Marr, 31, born High Alding, Kent
John, Son, Unm, 15, Ag Lab, born Ninfield
Elizabeth Ann, Dau, Unm, 5, Hastings

Summer Hill is part of the Barrack Ground.

Looks possible that George has been married before

Hope that fits in with your research

Hi Chris
Thanks for all that info. That certainly sounds like the family I am looking for, and the ages etc give me something to work on. I have been trying to find out more of Hastings history - I did get the History of Ore booklet when last in Hastings and I have read all of the articles you have put on your web site - very informative, thank you. I wonder, can you suggest some further reading, bearing in mind that books/articles on Hastings are not that easy to find here in the heart of Yorkshire.
Thanks again
Lesley

Hi There

The number 1 book for all things Hastings is:

Historic Hastings, A Tapestry of Life by J Manwaring Baines, Cinque Port Press. (£19.95 to buy, but well worth the money)
ISBN 0 948869 00 3

Another very good book - but now sadly out of print is:

Hastings: of Bygone Days - and the Present by Henry Cousins, published in 1911 by F J Parsons.
You can get this on Library Loan -
Catalogue Number at Hastings Library is 942.259 HAS

Hope that helps
