1851 Census: Aaron DUNFORD
« on: Monday 06 February 06 03:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello:
I am hoping to find our gr-gr-grandfather, Aaron Dunford [1825-1880], in the London, Middlesex census of 1851.  In that year, he should be with wife Charlotte [1828-1903], and possibly with his father, Joseph.
Aaron Dunford was born c1825 at Tarrant Gunville, Dorset.  His wife, Charlotte, was born in 1928 at Long Crichel, also in Dorset.
A brother, George, born c1830 at either Barrow or Brockley in Somerset, may also appear.
Can someone help, please?  I am most curious to find out who, if anyone, was residing with Aaron and Charlotte in 1851.
... and many thanks in advance,
Alison Causton

Hi Alison,

There is an Aaron Dunford, 27, (c1824), b Gunswill? Dorset, who is a private at Wellington Barracks, Westminster St Margaret.

Charlotte Dunford,  24, dressmaker, mar, b L. Critchell, is a dressmaker at Palace st, Westminster st Margaret. With her is daughter Mary, 5mos, b Westminster St Margt, and visitors Mary Ann Hutelchinson? 20 and Mary Long, 21.

Can't see George or Joseph.

Cheers,

Ros

Hello, Alison,

Futher to Ros' post, more details of 1851 census

HO107/1480  folio 874  page 9
Wellington Barracks, St. Margaret, Westminster

Aaron Dunsford was a private in the Coldstream Guards

Charlotte Dunford census details

HO107/1480   folio 533  page 46
47, Palace St., St Maragret, Westminster

Mary Ann Hutchinson  Dreaamker was born Walworth, Surrey
Mary Long, House Serv.was born  Richmond, Surrey

In the 1851 census index there were 3 entries for a Joseph Dunford in Somerset, none quoting Barrow or Brockley as place of birth.    Without knowing where Joseph was born & his age makes it difficult to pinpoint the correst one ina list of possibles.

Hope this helps,

Meliora

Hello, Meliora and Ros:
Thank you to you both for helping to crack part of this mystery ... I had wondered what pulled Aaron into the city; now I see it was the Army.
My best guess for a birth year for the father, Joseph, is 1795-1805.  Guesstimating a birth place is more difficult, although there were several Dunford families at Tarrant Gunville in Dorset.  Finding his birth place has become our proverbial "brick wall".  Perhaps the 1841 census will eventually yield up this secret.
It was the other son (Aaron's brother), George, who was born at Barrow or Brockley in Somerset.
Thanks again, and
Regards,
Alison

Hello, Alison,

Sorry, my error, I should have put George, not Joseph.

The three George entries for Somerset in the 1851 census were for age 13, Charlton,  age 28, Maperton, & age 44, Wanstrow.

There were five for Joseph in the date range you gave.
age 50,  born Canford, Dorset, census place Corfe Mullen
age 56,  born Marylebone, census  Marylebone
age 57, born Ossett, Yorkshire, census Shitlington, Yorks
age 52, born Longbridge Deveril, Wiltshire, census Lonbridge Deveri.
age 42, born Lewes, Surrey, census Lewes.

good luck with your search,

Meliora
