Hi Jinnie

            Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I have checked the 1841 census for Henbury and for Adlington where Thomas was in 1851, did not find a Joseph sorry, or any Bracegirdles in Henbury.

Did Thomas's wedding certificate have any witnesses we could check out ?

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your help, at the time Thomas was married, 1845, they were living in Bramall and married at St Mary's Stockport according to his marriage cert. The witnesses were David Hudson and James Wild. I am pretty certain that Thomas was born in the Henbury area 1823.
Thomas and his wife were in Adlington/Henbury in 1849 as at least two of their children were born there, it would be so nice to find his father, Joseph so I move back another generation.
Thanks again
Jinnie

Hi

Have done a bit more searching and found the following.

1851 census HO107-2158-F147 Sheet Lane Adlington

Thomas Bracegirdle head 28 coal miner Henbury
Sarah wife 28 Henbury
James son 2 Adlington
David 2 months Adlington
Henry Wright visitor 50 unwed ag lab Adlington
James Butterworth Vistor 22 marr coal miner Dean Row
Jane Kirk Visitor 38 marr Henbury

I did find out that Jane Kirk's maiden name was Hudson.

I have also searched the Bramhall area in 1841 but no sign of them, can you tell me the occupations of Thomas and his father from the marriage certificate.

Hi Peter,
Thanks again for your help, on the marriage cert. Thomas is a collier  and Joseph is a labourer. Thomas and Sarah had a least 7 children the first three are down as being born in Henbury and then they moved to Stavely in Derbyshire. I work in a Local Studies and Archives Library and have tried every which way to find a lead on Joseph to no avail so far...it is driving me crazy!
Thanks again

Hi

Are you sure he was alive in 1841 ? There is a death for a Joseph Bracegirdle indexed in the http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/   1837 aged 74 in Prestbury, which is the right registration district for the Henbury area.

Hi Peter,
Thanks again for your help, I have been thinking for a while that he may have died before Thomas was married, it was just that it doesn't say deceased against his name on the marriage cert. I know from working in Local Studies that not all relevant info is on certificates I had missed the entry on CheshireBMD so I think I will send for the certificate to see if it helps. If this is my Joseph he would have been 60yrs old when Thomas was born which is not unheard of. This makes me think that there may be other siblings for Thomas around so I'll keep looking.
Your  help is much appreciated.

Hi

As you say you cant take it for granted he was alive, I have just finished a search of all the coal mining areas including Adlington, Poynton, Worth, Woodford, Pott Shrigley etc, and found nothing, sorry.

Hi Peter,
Thanks so much for the trouble you are taking. I have decided that I must take a trip to look at Parish records for the area. Can you tell me if the church records for Henbury would come under Prestbury Parish or has Henbury got it's own parish church? I will contact Macclesfield Local Studies to see what if anything they have otherwise I guess it's a trip to Chester for me!
Thanks again
Jinnie
