1841 Census Look Up Please: Giles, Plymouth
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 15:31 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone advise me if Abraham Giles, wife Jane and son David appear in the 1841 census for Plymouth. In the 1851 census they are living in Stokes Lane along with mother in law Jane Carter.

Many Thanks

Sue

Hi Sue There is a David Giles in St Andrew. He is the right age but lists as born Devon...I can't see another David in Devon or Cornwall

Hello Kris

Thank you for looking for my Giles family. I thought with a name like Abraham the family would have been easy to find I think that they just evaded the enumerator. Abraham was a miner and supposed to have hailed from Fowey so perhaps thats where the family actually were as David was also described a miner when they were living in Plymouth in 1851.

Many thanks once again.

Sue

This is a family that comes up as a bit of a mystery to me when I am trying to follow a Jane Giles née ?, the mother of Elizabeth Ann Giles who marries a Johns and then marries Edwin Chown. Jane was supposed to be born Padstow, Cornwall.
From freecen (and family search), in 1861 Jane was 54, a Laundress, living in St Columb, Cornwall, the head and only person in her household, and deaf.
From family search, in 1871, Jane's 62, a laundress, born St Minver, Cornwall, and living in St Andrew with Elizabeth A, now Johns and a widow, born Padstow, and Elizabeth's 2 sons William John and John, b Plymouth.
From family search, in 1881, Jane's 68 (strange ages!), living at 38 Treville St, Plymouth, still b St Minver, Cornwall, and still a widow, now with no occupation. She's with Elizabeth, Elizabeth's new husband Edward (Edwin from other info) Chown, Edwin's sons William and Alfred & a William Johns who family search says is sister son but probably meaning step son of Edward
By the way, from freecen there were more people living with the Lynches and Giles.
Tracking down Jane before 1861 is really hard, and I had your family down as a vague possibility. I think she may have died 1886 from freebmd, in Plymouth. I'm only vaguely sideways and through in-laws, related to her.
