Edwin 'Ted' Edwards found
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 20:48 GMT (UK) »
At last found Edwin Edwards and family in the 1911 Census

They are at 987 Sherbrook Street (an apartment), Winnipeg.
He is described as a motorman, though  can't really read the section describing his employer

Does this mean he is working on the railroad?

I believe he probably ended up in Vancouver, as at least two children did.

I still hope to find his other siblings , mother and families, apart from George William, who was already found in  Ninette.

Motorman means the driver of a train or tram (one with an electric motor).

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~wyatt/alltime/winnipeg-mb.html - could the employer be 'Winnipeg Electric Railway Company'?  Or possibly 'Suburban Rapid Transit Company'?

Good news, Bob!...am going to look in the archives when I am feeling better...
as I have to see what I can find under WeryCo for someone else...
Not sure what is available, but  who knows what one can find?

Glad all your work with the census is paying off!

Give me the information to get me to the image and I'll see if I can make heads or tails of it for you...
nevermind...I see it's on the site already...get back to you if I find anything...

Yes, I believe it is badly scrawled as W e Railway...I have an image of an old
ticket from the streetcar days... your ancestor would have handled many, being
that he was the fellow who drove the streetcar. Very cool occupation...
Or perhaps that would have been the job of the lovely ladies they used as greeters to help promote business...

Thanks for the links

Interesting.

I met Ted Edwards in mid 1960s when I was around 13-14.

Of course he was retired, and I don't remember much about him from that time.

I hadn't anticipated finding him married and with first child before emigrating.

Would you believe I've had another find

Ted's sister Emma Caroline Edwards married Dennis W Smith

I've now found the marriage of their son  on the Manitoba vital records site
Ernest Dennis William Smith married Pauline Vilborg Johnson 1/7/1924 in Winnipeg

I think I'll have to get this certificate!
I hope there might be some extra information on it

Want did you need in the newspapers, again, as I don't think you were specific...

Thanks for the info JJ  (and jorose)

Not sure what info you have in archives JJ.

What I was looking for in newspapers was birth death and marriage notices.
I managed to get online access to the NY Times, so this was highly searchable.
Got me some extra people, also death notice found a cemetery, which had online records - a real treasure trove.
Death notice were the most profitable.

I now have a marriage date for Ernest Dennis William Smith (as above).
I have from a family paper a death date of 1937 for Ernest's grandmother Caroline Emma Edwards.
Emma or Emmie was the name she was known by, though official records tend to stick to Caroline.
I have no exact date though, so I don't know what is feasible

Likewise I have a death date of 1953 for Caroline Emma Edwards' daughter, called
Emma Caroline Smith. I have no death date for her husbdand though

so any of these deaths or marriages may have notices

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Following the suggestion, I rechecked the Nanaimo site

Caroline Emma Edwards - not yet listed

Dennis W Smith -not listed yet
Emma C Smith - three listed 1909-1910 perhaps I neeed to know imm date
Probably wrong as children not listed.
Ernest D W Smith - there is one, prob wrong as age is out
Fred J Smith - ditto

George William Edwards and family Imm 1906
No records for this family

Frederick Walter Edwards
No records for this family

Richard Whateley Edwards
No records for this family

Edwin Albert Edwards Imm 1908  There is a record on the Canada for 1909, though age is out
Alice Elizabeth Edwards Imm 1909 no plausible reocrds
Albert Edwin Edwards Imm 1909 there is a record on the Lake Champlain, though age 6 months out however without his mother, so probably wrong

So not further forward at present
